for those that are religiously inclined, it is believed that god has a plan for all of us. perhaps our fate is predetermined by one or more almighty, all-knowing deities. perhaps when we die, there is a heaven or a hell. perhaps it is god that blessed us with consciousness. perhaps that is why we emote, why we ponder, and why we mourn.

for those that are more scientifically inclined, it is recognized that the brain we think and feel with is a mass of neurons, rapidly sending messages between themselves. actions and memories alike are choreographed through synapses, creating a sea of chemicals that control how we move, make decisions, and what we feel. while our consciouness is not fully understood, it is clear that it is present. so when we die and our synapses cease to fire, what is to become of our sentience?

our journey through life will inevitably end in death. many of us prepare for that eventuality. however, life is full of surprises. whether it was destined or not, there is nothing more frustrating than having our mortality thrust in our faces like it was today. in my ignorance, i believed i was prepared to deal with the loss of lives, be it my own or that of a loved one or close aquaintance. it is now that i realize what a void this kind of loss can create.
