IC Information:
Name: Sebastian Flyte
Fandom: Brideshead Revisited (Miniseries)
Timeline: Shortly before leaving Oxford
Age: 19
Appearance: See image here. Sebastian is of an average height, perhaps about 5'10", although this is simply an estimate based on those around him, and has a fairly slim build. He has blond hair that he wears swept to one side, and brown eyes that are generally heavily lidded. His face has the tendency to look somewhat somber or pouting, even when he is not intentionally making that kind of expression. This is due in part to his deep-set eyes, but also because of his high cheekbones which give him a dramatic look. He dresses well, showing his upbringing in the upper class, and even his casual clothes have a great deal of style to them, as seen here.

Abilities: None. Sebastian is a completely normal human being and really has no special abilities.

Personality: The first thing one must know about Sebastian is that he has a flair for the dramatic. Somewhat sad events can be utter tragedies if he is in a tragic mood. Things that would normally only bring a slight smile to someone's face brings him great joy if he is feeling joyful. He feels things strongly, and he feels them with every bit of himself. To tell him that his feelings were over the top or unrealistic would do nothing to quiet them, because everything is such a huge deal to him. Unfortunately, this does mean that he can be impossible to cheer up or rouse out of a terrible mood. In order for him to start feeling something different, he simply has to wait. Something else will soon come along and change how he feels. However, nobody can jolly him out of feeling bad--it's on his own terms.

Everything is very significant to Sebastian, and he can take something like a broken toe and whip himself up into such an emotional state that he feels as though he is dying of a great injury. While this makes him very sensitive, it also means that he can inadvertently manipulate his friends. When his friends believe that a great tragedy is going on in Sebastian's life and rush to his aid, they are sometimes frustrated that what is really going on is nothing more than a small setback. However, due to his generally charming nature, his friends tend to deal with this quirk of his, seeing it as an amusing eccentricity more than an irritation.

It is rare to see Sebastian in a rage, but it can (and has) happened. However, because of his dramatic nature, he is far more likely to pout, refuse to talk about whatever has made him angry, and attempt to drown his feelings with alcohol. Sebastian's drinking is necessary to mention because it ties in to important aspects of his personality. Throughout his entire life, Sebastian suggests that his family has been simultaneously unsupportive and suffocating. His mother, particularly, inspires great anger within him. Therefore, when he is around his family, he increases his alcohol consumption greatly, partially to attempt to deaden his feelings and partially to have something to do. It is not only within his own home that he drinks, however. At university, he can quite often be found drinking, even during the day, and his drinking has gotten him in trouble, although he is just as frequently seen as the life of the party. For example, the way he met his best friend, Charles Ryder, was by vomiting into his window one night while he was completely drunk.

Sebastian is seen as a bit of an eccentric, and he does nothing to squash this perception. In fact, he embraces it. He is the type of fellow to wear a false beard at a party just to confuse people, to spend time with the most flamboyant and dramatic people he can, and perhaps most notably, to carry around a teddy bear, which is named Aloysius. He often talks through Aloysius, saying things like Aloysius refuses to talk to him unless he apologizes to Charles for vomiting in his window. Aloysius essentially has a life of his own in Sebastian's mind, and he is rarely seen without him, at least at university. His friends are amused and charmed by this aspect of his personality, but others see it as strange.

The teddy bear, Aloysius, is perhaps more representative of the fact that Sebastian simply does not want to grow up. Although he likes to spend his time drinking and partying, there is a part of him that is still very much like a child. He values his youth and his ability to do as he wishes, go where he wishes, and have fun while doing so. It is not a coincidence that "Aloysius" was the name of the patron saint of youth. Sebastian is not exactly vain, perhaps, but he does greatly value his appearance, and takes pains to look put-together.

Hand in hand with his somewhat childish nature is the fact that he is very possessive, especially of his friends. While this makes him someone who is capable of forming strong friendships quickly, it also means that he can get jealous when he feels that his friends are slipping away from him. He tends to refer to people as belonging to someone, in order to define their roles in his life. When he is close with someone, he wants to spend all of his time with them, and enjoys doing spontaneous and fun things with them, but if they start growing close to someone else, he can feel very suspicious.

There are strong implications that Sebastian is gay, although both the book and the miniseries never state it outright. His extremely close relationship with Charles, his best friend, and the fact that he is close to some overtly gay men would suggest that he is. However, whether he is or not is not the aspect of his personality that I am finishing this section with. It is the fact that Sebastian is a deeply conflicted character. His sexuality may play into this conflict, but it is also his family's religion that affects him. His family is Catholic, and while Sebastian describes himself as a Catholic to others, he also feels that his family sees him as a failed Catholic, since he is extremely hedonistic. However, he says he likes the idea of Catholicism, though he doesn't follow his family's strong religious feelings. This is one of the main reasons he has difficulty with his family, and one of his great internal conflicts.

History: Not much is known about his early life except what he says, and that can be scattered.  We know that Sebastian Flyte was born into an upper class family around 1904, as he is 19 when we first meet him in 1923.  His father was the Marquess of Marchmain, he was part of the aristocratic Flyte family, who had a good deal of money and property, and he was the second child of four.  He had an older brother, Lord Brideshead (called "Bridey"), who would, of course, inherit everything, and two younger sisters, Lady Julia (only a year younger), and Lady Cordelia.  The family is Catholic, and Sebastian's father, the Marquess, had converted from Anglicanism to Catholicism in order to marry his mother.  However, Sebastian's father subsequently abandoned his wife, moved to Italy, and took up with a mistress.  Despite this, they are not officially divorced, since Sebastian's mother is still Catholic and does not believe in divorce.

Sebastian grows up with a good deal of money, and a palatial home called Brideshead, but there are signs that he is not particularly comfortable with his family.  Whether it is because of their religion, which he only somewhat practices (referring to himself as a "half-heathen" jokingly) but thinks is a beautiful idea, or because of his mother's controlling nature, he has a great deal of problems with them.  Indeed, when he meets who will become his best friend, Charles Ryder, in 1923, he is reluctant to introduce him to the family, believing that the family will somehow manipulate Charles into preferring them to Sebastian.

In any case, this is getting a bit ahead of ourselves.  Sebastian attends Oxford, and is a student at the Christ Church college, which is one of the largest colleges that make up Oxford.  He immediately makes friends, all of whom enjoy partying, drinking, and carousing far more than they enjoy studying, and Sebastian, of course, fits right in.  One night in March, 1923, as he is returning from a party extremely drunk -- so drunk that he must be half-carried by his friends -- he stumbles across what looks to be the Hertford College campus at Oxford and vomits into the ground floor window of a student named Charles Ryder.

Sebastian is upset about his behavior, and sends Charles a note and flowers the next day, inviting him to lunch. In typical Sebastian fashion, the note states that Aloysius, his teddy bear, won't speak to him unless he apologizes for how he behaves to Charles.  The two have lunch together, where Charles meets Sebastian's flamboyant and dramatic friends, and they begin to be friends.  Soon, they are going on trips to the countryside together, sometimes with Sebastian driving, although he is not a particularly good driver, and spending most of their time together, which means they are studying less and less.  Too, the amount of drinking that goes on is fun, at first, but soon Charles, if not Sebastian, starts to see the consequences.

Eventually, Sebastian allows Charles to talk him into going to Brideshead and meeting his family.  Sebastian is concerned that Charles will like his family better than they like him, and talks about how charming his family can be.  He displays his possessiveness when he worries about this, but is finally convinced to go.  Charles enjoys the time they spend there together, and does become friendly with the family, although he is still far closer to Sebastian.  Sebastian exercises this closeness by summoning Charles quite suddenly during the winter holiday, telling him that he's dying and needs Charles to come immediately.  When Charles arrives, Sebastian has only incurred a broken toe.  Again, he displays his flair for the dramatic.

Roleplay Sample - Log: He had woken up with a hangover. That, in it of itself, wasn't particularly bothersome. After all, he reminded himself, lighting his cigarette before he even pulled himself into a seated position, last night had been very good, and everyone had been in fine form. Besides, hangovers could always be cured the old-fashioned way: a small glass of champagne would set him right again.

Reaching out, groping blindly at his bedside table, he was disappointed and somewhat taken aback to realize that the bottle that had been there the night before was nowhere to be found. He still wasn't fully awake. Perhaps it was there and he simply couldn't find it. He took a drag on the cigarette. Thought for a moment. Rolled over and looked at the bedside table, expecting the bottle to be tantalizingly out of reach.

Would it be wrong for him to call someone in to help him pour a drink?

That thought, however, was futile. His bedside table was conspicuously absent any form of alcohol. All that remained was Plato's Dialogues, a book he hadn't read but had really meant to, and a pair of cufflinks which he was at least relatively certain were his. Neither of those would solve his problem. This was a disaster.

"Charles!" He didn't bellow it, exactly, but within a few moments, Charles came 'round the corner, hair tousled, in a dressing robe, cigarette in hand.

"My champagne," he said, giving a pointed glance to the desolate wasteland that was his bedside table.

Charles didn't answer, only shaking his head and smoking, still looking tired.

This would simply not stand, and it made him immediately suspicious. "You poured it down the sink, didn't you? You got rid of it! I knew it, I knew you would."

"You finished it last night," Charles answered, not at all impressed by the petulant outburst.

"I did no such thing! It's in the sink, isn't it? Well, then, tonight you shall be buying the drinks."

A nod, an acquiesce from Charles. Victory secured, the smile returned to Sebastian's face.

Roleplay Sample - Journal:
[He presses a button. Then another button. Then five buttons at once, managing to place a call to everyone without realizing]

Positively beastly. I don't know what this place is, but it's certainly not home.

[A long-suffering sigh]

Aloysius, do you know what this place is? No, I don't suppose you do, do you? Do you at least know where Charles is?

[A noise of frustration]

You're no help. No help at all. I'm not speaking to you for the rest of the day.
