Personality:
Canon Background: There's not a lot of detail on Flynn's history as he keeps pretty closed-mouthed about it in canon. We know his real name is Eugene Fitzherbert and he has something of a tale of woe for a childhood; he's an orphan, raised in a poor part of town with a bunch of other orphans. They don't seem to have been terribly well taken care of; not abused, simply not funded well enough to have much beyond the bare necessities.

But Eugene always dreamed of having something more. He'd read stories about Flynnigan Rider to his fellow orphans, a "swashbuckling rogue" who was rich, powerful and something of a lady killer. At some point in his childhood Eugene decided to dump the drudgery of his own life and adopt a new name-- Flynn Rider. He'd take on the persona of his storybook hero and become a swashbuckling rogue in his own right. He'd have money, women, and never have to worry about not having anything ever again.

In actuality, in order to achieve this dream Flynn ended up adopting the dubious profession of a talented thief. He accepted an incredibly challenging job along with his temporary partners, the Stabbington Brothers, to steal the crown reserved for the Princess Rapunzel directly from the castle itself. It was heavily guarded, but Flynn managed to steal it and, after a brief chase, escape into the woods. Dumping the Stabbington Brothers and taking off with the crown all for himself, he's quickly found by one of the guard's horses, Maximus. The horse chases him literally off of a cliff and sends him scrambling through the valley below. It's while hiding from Maximus that Flynn stumbles upon a mysterious tower. Thinking to hide out there until it's safe, Flynn scales the tower and is surprised to find it inhabited.

And to find it's inhabitant equipped with a frying pan, which he quickly becomes intimately acquainted with. After he comes to (feeling surprisingly worse for wear), he finds himself tied to a chair by a strange blonde woman's hair and interrogated. After convincing her that he's not in fact there for her hair (what would he want with hair anyway?) she manages to blackmail him into taking her to see the glowing lanterns the kingdom lights every year in honor of the Princess' birthday in exchange for the crown he'd rightfully stolen, but she'd stolen from him and hidden while he was unconscious.

They traveled together for a bit, Flynn gradually coming to realize that Rapunzel was even more innocent and unworldly than he'd originally imagined, and decided to try and take advantage of this by trying to scare her into going home. To that end he escorted her to the Snuggly Duckling, a tavern with a deceptively adorable name that's known to house a particularly rough band of barbarians. And it's from this canon point that I take Flynn!

AU Background: Fortunately, a lot of this can stay the same. His canon backstory still works, along with his inspiration for becoming Flynn Rider up to stumbling upon Rapunzel in her tower.

The primary difference I'll be adding is his invitation letter. I thought about this for a bit, wondering how he'd get a letter if he had no home. I've decided to treat it sort of like the Hogwarts letters, in that it just sort of appears wherever he is, then continues to stalk him if ignored.

So he'd be fumbling through his pack, rummaging for various items, and a letter would appear. He'd frown, look at it, then chuck it to the side. Then later he'd be pulling on his boots, only to discover a letter jammed down one side of the leg. After a few weeks of this, he'd begin to wonder if he was being magically stalked. He'd flee from the letters as if opening them would unleash some sort of terrible plague, bound to doom him to a life of poverty and chastity.

Enter Rapunzel, waving a letter around and demanding he escort her to this "academy." Deciding this as the final straw, he'd reluctantly agree to take her, secreting off to finally open one of the dozens of letters now constantly overflowing from his pack, and make a silent agreement with it that he'd show up if the stupid thing would agree to finally give him a reprieve.
