Too much food

I've noticed that restaurants in Indianapolis like to give me twice a much food as I can possibly eat. Don't get me wrong, I hate when restaurants shortchange me with such small portions that I'm still hungry after I'm finished, but I also cringe when I have to throw food away (my hotel room has no fridge or microwave). There are three reasons this bothers me.

1) I could easily make another meal out of all the leftover food and save money.

2) People here and abroad are starving because they can't afford food, or because of food shortages, and restaurants here are piling copious amounts of foods on people's plates that is just going to be thrown away.

3) As an ecologist, hunger issues aside, throwing food in the trash makes me cringe, in much the same way as throwing recyclable materials in the trash. I would much rather just throw food out back and let the microbes, fungi, and animals take care of it. Why needless waste landfill space with old food when there are suites of organisms that will take care of it? I know this can attract varmints, but it's not like they can't just go through your trash.
