Accidentally locking eyes

Jul 19, 2006 06:04

I.

Seated. Nonchalant. Unassuming and disengaged
in conversation with diverted eyes darting
from one corner to the other, scanning faces
eavesdropping momentarily in the voices of others

II.

We take notice of each other but we cross our legs,
fold our arms, take small sips
The echoing of the empty steps we traverse as
strangers placed in obscure unfamiliar settings
We lay our thoughts down on restless sheets
take no notice the rustling of the leaves, or
the bustling streets and the stranger
with their eyes in the corners,
as you read

III.

I do not know the sweetness
in the knot at the back of your throat
You have not met my delicate fingertips
light as breath against your vein
Our backs will bend away from each other

IV.

The doors and gates open and unlock
We rise and the only thing that touches
our skin is the air from moving away
blowing my hair

V.
Remember when our shadows overlapped
against the tiles of the floor
onto the silent landscape
Moving on
