CHARACTER NAME: Koriand’r (Starfire)
FANDOM: DC Comics (Teen Titans)
CHRONOLOGY: New Teen Titans v2 39
BACKGROUND:
Koriand’r was born a princess on a far away planet known as Tameran. She lived there with her family, including her sister Komand’r (Also known as Blackfire), who she shared a fierce rivalry with. Their relationship continued downhill and eventually came to a head when both were training under the Warlords of Okaara. During a sparring match, Blackfire attempted to kill Starfire, however she failed and was expelled. She swore to get her revenge on her sister someday and would go on to betray her people, by supplying information to an enemy race known as the Citadel.
Using Blackfire’s insider information, the Citadel easily conquered Tameran. In order to save their planet from total annihilation, Starfire’s parents were forced to send Starfire into enslavement at the hands of the Citadel, never to return to her planet or the Citadel would continue their destruction of the planet. Blackfire reappeared as Starfire’s master. Blackfire made the most of her new position, putting her sister through years of torture and abuse. When she broke free long enough to kill one of her captors, Blackfire decided to put her own sister to death. However, before she had a chance, both sisters were attacked and captured by the Psions, a sadistic group of alien scientists. The Psions preformed a procedure to see how much energy the Tameranian girls’ bodies could absorb before exploding.
During the procedure, Blackfire’s forces attacked in an attempt to rescue her. In the chaos, Starfire broke free before freeing her sister who was still absorbing energy. Still far from the loving older sister, Blackfire used the power she had absorbed to knock Starfire down, having her restrained for a later execution. Starfire finally managed to escape by stealing a starcraft. She fled her sisters ship and crash landed on the nearest planet, Earth. It was there she met and joined the newly re-formed Teen Titans.
Unable to speak or understand English, Kory was given the name Starfire, after the team saw her use of the starbolts. Finally frustrated by not only the language barrier, but the strange Earthling insistence to not kill their enemies, Starfire kissed Robin, using her ability to absorb language through touch to learn English. She quickly became a permanent fixture on the team, as both a terrifyingly fierce warrior and devoted teammate. Shortly after, Starfire and the rest of the team are thrown into the world of Raven’s birth, Azarath, where they learned of her father Trigon. The demon Trigon is bent on bringing destruction and death to the world and it’s up to the Titans to stop him. When Raven sacrifices herself, agreeing to go with Trigon to keep him from creating a Hell on Earth, the Titans refuse to let it be and follow after her, finally defeating Trigon and bringing Raven home. Though Starfire and Raven are not close at first, after this, and even later when Raven is purged of the demon born in her by her father, the two women begin to form a close friendship, Starfire occasionally confiding her feelings of loneliness and homesickness to Raven. It’s Donna she forms the closest bond with the fastest, sharing an apartment with her for much of her time on Earth and later becoming one of her favorite models. She is the one Kory most frequently turned to in times of heartache.
Kory was forced to deal one day with the arrival of the the Gordanians, who worked for her sister, Blackfire. Captured and returned to her sister, she was given to Lord Daymn, high chieftain of the Citadel. With the appearance of one of the Psions, it’s revealed that they plan to capture X’hal, the living goddess of the Tamarans, in order to crush a rebellion that has begun. They are able to capture the goddess and Starfire is again left to the hands of the Psions. After the capture of X’hal, Blackfire kills Daymn, becoming the new high cheiftan of the Citadel. The Titans come to Starfire’s rescue just in time, with the help of the Omega’s, freeing her. She faces her sister again in battle and through both the efforts of her and the Titans, Kory manages to defeat Blackfire, driving the Citadel from her home world and free X’hal. Before returning to Earth, Starfire is even able to see her beloved family again, safe and sound.
Dick quickly becomes the second person closest to Starfire and her most complicated relationship. The relationship bounced from on to off, with Dick, Robin at the time, worried that seeing each other would ruin relationships within the team. After Starfire’s attempted relationship with a man who was secretly hired by the criminal organization H.I.V.E. to get information from her ends with him dead, Starfire is slow to recover. After Starfire’s kidnapping, the two begin seeing each other again, but as Dick’s relationship with Batman began to deteriorate and Dick attempted to establish himself as Nightwing, it put a hard strain on the relationship between him and Kory.
In the mean time, the team struggles to come back from the betrayal of Terra, a young girl with earth controlling abilities who posed as their teammate for several months. The revealing of Terra’s betrayal and a confrontation with Deathstroke, Terra’s partner, nearly led to the team’s death. With Terra gone, Starfire attempted to rally her teammates spirits, looking at the bright side of the situation.
Starfire would later return again to her home planet sometime later, during a period of strife when Tameran was on the brink of a civil war. In order to keep peace, Starfire’s father offered his daughter’s hand in marriage to the heir of the ruling Southern continent, Karras. The marriage was acknowledged as strictly political since both Karras and Starfire were in love with other people, but once again a strain was put on the relationship between her and Dick.
Starfire returned again to her home on Earth to continue on in the Teen Titans and begin mending her relationship with Dick, though not before seeing her sister Blackfire come into power, with her parents acting as advisors. Back on Earth, Kory moved out of Donna’s apartment, getting a place of her own and using some of the down time, though it was few and far between at times, to focus once again on her ever complicated relationship. Dick, seeing Kory’s marriage as a binding one, was reluctant to continue as they had previously. Kory was able to sit him down and explain that though both her and Karras cared for each other, it was in no way the same as a union between two people who loved one another, convincing him that the marriage had been a political formality.
Unfortunately, before they were able to make true progress, Starfire was framed for murder. Thanks primarily to the efforts of Dick and Raven, she was quickly cleared of the charges and able to return home. It was during this time that Raven, who was experiencing emotions for the first time thanks to the destruction of her father’s influence inside of her, fell in love with Dick. Using her empathy powers, she began sending Dick feelings of returned love, including dreams of the two of them together. Rather than allowing Dick to handle it, Starfire chose to step in and whisk Raven away to a getaway vacation in the tropics. The two spent the time bonding, for the first time truly coming to understand one another. Shortly after returning from the trip, Dick makes the final decision to move in with Starfire, much to her delight.
PERSONALITY:
Kory is very defined by the culture of her home planet. Tameranians are emotional creatures that never hold back in anything. Rather than being reserved or withdrawn, she feels things whole heartedly and openly. It’s easy to tell when she’s sad, happy or angry. Kory gives love and affection freely, always friendly and warm to those around her. To her friends and her teammates, she’s protective and devoted, willing to go down to the wire for every single one. She tends to be optimistic, always looking for the bright side. It’s another trait from her home planet, Tameranians being a joy-seeking people, always looking for the brightness and pleasure in life. Despite her warmth and optimism, Kory isn’t flighty or a doormat, the flip side of all her warmth and optimism is she’s still a warrior at heart. She hates as whole heartedly as she loves, refusing to take nonsense from anyone and has only since coming to Earth learned to restrain her powers when fighting an enemy. Because of the abuse at the hands of her sister, she’s particularly sensitive to being used and she hates being trapped.
A lot of Earthling mannerisms confuse and occasionally bother her. She’s never been able to understand people’s reluctance to open up and speak freely and the human tendency to suppress emotion tends to be the one that bothers her the most. She can’t understand why humans insist on doing things that hurt themselves in the long run. Despite that she does genuinely lover her new home and the people she meets and is insatiably curious. She wants to learn more and is genuinely interested in people. There are certain things, like the human tendency to repress emotion, there are certain aspects of Earth culture that is just completely beyond her. No one’s explained satisfactorily (in her mind) that while yes learning a completely new language by kissing someone is a VERY handy trick, it’s not really proper and she still doesn’t understand what the big deal with nudity is.
CLASS: Hero
SUPERHERO NAME: Starfire
ALTER EGO: Kory Anders
POWER: The Tameranian physiology is such that it’s constantly absorbing ultraviolet radiation which the body then converts to energy that’s used for flying. This energy can also be converted into powerful blasts referred to as “starbolts,” a side effect of the Psions experiments. She also possesses superhuman strength and can assimilate foreign languages through touch.
THIRD PERSON:
Stumbling out of the machine and into the strange room had been disorienting. Kory really didn’t like popping up in places she didn’t know she was going to and for a moment thought that perhaps the entire thing was Raven’s doing. That didn’t seem too out of character for her, even with the time the two of them had spent together on their little getaway, Raven was still so reserved. But nevermind that, she had to find her friends first if she wanted to figure out why she was here. There was a moment of dizzying worry as she stepped out of the building. What if her friends weren’t here? Worse yet, what if they were and they were in danger? Had whatever teleported her here separated them on purpose? The machine had spoken of being a hero, so perhaps it wasn’t evil, but…
Starfire took to the air, the act a comfort and the sheer joy she always felt when she left the ground raising her spirits. If her friends and teammates were here should would find them and if there was danger, she would defend them. The City was a familiar Earth sprawl of concrete and iron, with the occasional green dots of parks, and that too was a comfort. She was still on Earth and there wasn’t any sign of immediate danger, aside from the downed overpass. She frowned at that and took to the ground, several blokes away. The situation for the moment seemed contained and she was eager to find her teammates and figure out just what was going on before anything else. She glanced down at the little device in her hand, the one the machine had given her. If any information could be found, perhaps it could be found there. It was a place to start, at any rate.
