So I went to my local outback steakhouse yesterday for dinner, and ordered my usual hot tea to drink.
"We don't have hot tea anymore," the waitress said.
"That's odd, I come here fairly often and that's always what I drink."
"Well, we stopped serving it."
"Okay, fine. Just bring me a cup of hot water."
So I go out to my car where I keep tea bags for use in those restaurants that don't serve real tea, and bring a few back in with me. The water arrives at my table, but it's tepid.
"The water is not really hot enough to make tea," I said.
"That's because they redid the whole service area, and we don't have a hot water dispenser anymore. The only way we can get hot water is to put a cup in the microwave, and these cups heat up more than the water does."
I'm really starting to think there's a conspiracy to stop Americans from drinking tea.
[update: that store seems to have started selling hot tea again. maybe there's hope for America after all.]
