A neighbor stopped by to chat last night while I was watering two of my tomato plants (the other wasn't as dry and got watered this morning*)... First she said how nice they looked

It showed up as an allergy on the blood test and I noticed a bit of extra acid reflux when I ate them again, but that's it. So last year I went on a BLT binge (turkey bacon).
And yes, I found out why they are splitting. Next year (assuming I do this again) I'll try to pick seeds that are less prone to splitting. And I'll get larger pots. I've got this crazy idea of putting wheels on one of my old shed doors so I can put larger pots on and move them... but that'll probably never happen.
I put mulch on the top, so I have to stick my fingers into the soil to test it. I also had problems at the beginning with blossom end rot, but that was only a handful of tomatoes. It's hard to water these right in their small pots, but at least the tomatoes are still edible.
The one "pot" I made I've got raised on a plant roller stand that never worked and drilled some big holes in the bottom.
I only watered mid-day in an emergency. (I thought it rained more the day before, but the storm I drove home in must have missed home. And I looked out the next afternoon & everything was drooping! This is why I do a finger test now.)
Blossom end rot can be cured with lime. Just sprinkle it on the soil once and water normally. It will absorb into the soil.
You saw the link over on nosebeepbears LJ, I recommend buying from them. I have had excellent luck with their products. In addition to the Sungold Cherry tomatoes, These are the large tomatoes I'm growing this year and they are doing great.
FWIW, I have never seen any retail nursery or store selling Sungolds.
it depends on what causes the blossom end rot and you have to test the soil to really know what that is. I changed some things and it hasn't returned. (I mulched... and am watering more deeply when I water - instead of a little in the AM and a little in the PM.)
I bought these seeds at a regular store, but I do this again I'll choose more carefully. Splitting a pack or two with Jo will help - I don't want to place an order by myself for as little as I'm going to be planting.
I was on vacation when the BER showed up. My neighbors kept my plants alive - which was all I really wanted them to do. But watering them properly might not have happened. And inconsistent watering is a big cause of BER.
