AUTHOR'S NOTE: Ugh. This one of those pieces started at 3am because inspiration likes to strike at the wrong times -.- Piece is still highly experimental, but is very close to my heart as I draw from my own experiences as an adopted child (and from my mom's own experiences as an adoptive mother). Dedicated to jaricchi. I miss you!

WARNINGS: Genderbend/fem!Sho, so this is a het fic. Do not read if you are uncomfortable with it. Also, do not read if you are touchy about the topic of adoption. :p

All These Years
Part One

Shoko wonders how her life would've been like had she not decided to adopt her cousin's daughter (only two months old then) when the child's parents passed away in a car accident.

The child survived with nary a scratch, and while people think it was truly a miracle on its own, Shoko likes to believe that the child's parents willingly gave up their lives in order to protect their little girl. The apple of their eyes. The star of their lives.

The moment Shoko saw the child, crying and thrashing about in her grandmother's arms, she decided right then and there (with not much thought as to how she would go about telling friends and family) that she would take her under her wing. That she would raise her in the best way possible. That she would sustain the future the little girl almost lost along with the memories of her parents.

Megumi.

Her parents named her Megumi, with the fervent wish that their firstborn child would always be loved by many, blessed in abundance, and protected by those who loved her dearly. Shoko agrees (with her own conscience, that is) it would be disrespectful and dishonorable to the memory of her cousin and her husband if she changed the name of their little girl when she finally adopts her.

'Oh well,' Shoko muses to herself. 'Megumi is a lovely name. I think I'd have given it to her anyway.'

{ the first year }

The first year was not easy. Although Shoko did have experience in raising a child (having been partially responsible for raising her youngest brother along with her parents since Shu was born when she was 13), she was often at a loss on how to raise a little girl.

"I'm used to raising Shu," she complains one day to her mother, who only laughs and nods, an ever-knowing smile on her face. "How the hell would I know what a baby girl wants?"

Yoko only shrugs and gives her daughter a pat on the shoulder. "You chose to take her under your wing, my daughter. It is a challenge for you to grow together with her."

Shoko can only groan in exasperation at her mother's response. "Here you go again with your cryptic replies. I'm just asking about WHAT a baby girl would want!"

"You never asked that."

Shoko facefaults.

{ the second year }

Shoko starts to think she might've decided on adopting Megumi a little two fast. The little girl was in her toddler years, and while Shoko knows her Megumi is at an age where she would demand a lot of her attention, Shoko never knew it meant taking Megu (a nickname she somehow started to call the child with) along to News ZERO tapings, especially on nights when her mother or sister could not watch over her.

Megumi is quiet child, but she could also be one mean brat.

On nights when Megu is taken along to the tapings and the little girl happens to be in a bad mood (because Mama refused to give her ice cream for fear of her developing sore throat after eating so much chocolate), Megu's tantrums manifest themselves in ways unimaginable. Something like that one time Shoko finds coffee artistically painted (yes, because the faint lines of caramel brown seemed to have been drawn on the paper by chubby little fingers) on the pre-program intervew notes she prepared for her interview with Gorbachev the next day. She tries to confront the child about it (in a nice and very Mama way, of course), but all she could ever get was a sweet smile, a glomp, and a haphazardly placed wet kiss on the cheek.

Shoko throws her hands up in defeat, and decides to forego creating new pre-program interview notes, and instead opts to conduct a spontaneous intervew. She is only extremely shocked when she finally meets Gorbachev, who apparently decides on the same thing, and is glad that Shoko has not prepared anything at all.

Maybe Megu did know Gorbachev would want a spontaneous and no pretenses interview?

Shoko could only wonder in both amazement and uncertainty.

{ the third year }

As Megu finally turns three, Shoko is somehow glad, but is also overcome by mixed feelings of pride and sadness. Megu is finally old enough to be sent to nursery school, and while Shoko is proud she has endured three years (so far) of raising the little girl, she cannot help but be a little saddened at the idea that she was somehow sending off her baby girl into the real world.

Well, not just yet, but she knows sending the child to nursery school was one step closer to bringing her into the harsh reality of the world.

Her toddler is slowly becoming less of a baby, and more of a child. Shoko does not mind, but she briefly wonders how it would be like when the child is finally eighteen...

...No.

Not yet.

She brushes these thoughts away. These times were far into the future -- a future she knows nothing of, and a future she is afraid of. A future that meant telling Megu the truth about who her parents really were.

Shoko decides it is not time to think about that yet, but she knows that it would eventually come around.

For now, Shoko decides to focus on making the correct choice of lunchbox to pick for Megu.

A/N: How is it so far? Just testing the waters. This seems more like a collection of drabbles more than anything else, focusing on Shoko and Megumi's growth as mother and daughter. We will be introducing Papa, ahem, Satoshi as Shoko's prospective suitor in the next chapter.

I decided to break this into four chapters, three years covered per chapter, for a total of sixteen years. (; Tell me what you think!
