Let's perpetuate as many stereotypes and prejudices as we possibly can! Yay! *rips hair out*
I've been carrying around stickers from the Woman's Bookstore which say "This is offensive to women". I haven't been able to use them - not because I haven't seen offensive things, but the really, really horrible shit turns up on TV and in papers where one sticker isn't going to get seen by others. They don't put shit like this on subway ads where they can be defaced, which means they KNOW what they're doing.
My mother was worried about what would happen when Kat and I were holding hands in the Pembrok Wal-Mart. She was worried the backward, conservative residents of small town Ottawa Valley might say something mean. I say this type of programming is doing a lot more damage - it's reinforcing the ignorance.
