I went to see Harry and the Potters perform at the big library downtown tonight (er, rather yesterday night as it's now after midnight?) and it was a blast!
Yesterday I was trying to figure out what to wear because I wanted to wear something supporting my house colors (since it was a Harry and the Potters concert after all): I'm pretty certain I'd be in Hufflepuff, so that would be yellow and black; however, I also feel like there's a bit of a chance I could wind up in Slytherin, so I also wanted to sneak in a little bit of green. I wound up wearing a yellow tank top under a black scoop neck 3/4 sleeve t-shirt with a plaid skirt that featured yellow and black (and burgundy...), black tights, and black shoes that have a green insert inside. I also wore my hair in pigtails ala Hannah Abbott.
Right, so, today I got to the library a little less than two and a half hours before showtime and found a very long line already in progress. It interested me what a wide variety of ages were represented there - from like 2-3 year old kids through middle aged (or older?) grownups, I'd say most of the people were in their late teens though. There were some kids dressed up in Gryffindor ties, sweaters, and some wizarding type robes. One of these was a really cute guy (who was probably several years younger than me, and seemed to be with a girlfriend...) who looked like a teenage Lupin. I think I spotted one kid with a Ravenclaw scarf, and there was a guy with a yellow and black striped shirt so, maybe he was a Hufflepuff too? There was also a group of kids who had sporting jerseys on with last names of various HP characters on the back (Tonks, Lovegood, Thomas...). I brought with some magazines to read while in line, and while I was reading one of them a little girl - about 6 or 7 - came up to me and asked me if she could read the magazine when I was done with it. I said sure, and once we'd gotten passes (the show was free, but it had limited capacity so you had to stand in line to get a pass in order to get in) I found the little girl and told her she could keep the magazine. The girl's mom commented that they were trying to find a way to keep her from being bored and she apologized about that, but I said it was no problem (it really wasn't).
The room the concert was held in has this awesome ceiling, which is pretty much entirely glass. So it set a nice Great Hall kind of mood - Harry and the Potters commented on this during their concert. I got a seat in about the third or fourth row, which was cool, and found that the band (or the library?) had left a few HP games (a crossword, word search, and a jumble), a plastic/paper/ribbon wand making kit, and a list of recommended books to read if you like the HP series. Before the show started they also held a raffle hosted by a guy who seemed to not really know the HP series very well, for example, he cheerfully greeted us by saying "Welcome muggles and mudbloods!" o.O Yeah. Anyway, I just sat there making my wand and reading my magazines and then the little girl I gave my magazine to found me again and said, "Um, Luna, is this seat taken?" the seat was taken - by someone I didn't know - but I was surprised that she called me Luna. I mean I wasn't trying to go as Luna or anything, but I guess I appeared like her to this girl? That was actually kinda cool XD I like Luna a lot. Before the girl called me Luna, while I was at the concert, I had been wondering if I seemed like Lunaish. I was there by myself, and I was kinda in my own little world reading my magazines... plus I have long blonde hair, blue eyes, and was wearing kinda clog-like shoes.
So Harry and the Potters were joined by a drummer whom they notified us was "baby Hagrid" or rather 3 year old Hagrid who was the size of a teenage boy. The two Harrys had a lot of fun banter, reminiscing about old times and so forth. One of the first songs they played was “I am a Wizard”. The Harrys told us that for tonight we would be one collective Harry Potter. The crowd was up on their feet for the whole concert and there was a lot of wand waving, dancing, singing along, screaming, swaying, jumping, and fist pumping - where appropriate.
They played “Fluffy” and a song about the Troll from PS in which they directed the crowd in singing parts of it (they also commented about how little house points they got for doing that, but said that didn’t really matter) - that was their “monster section” of the set. They did a song about Hagrid which had dance moves that we all quickly learned and did along to the song - which they played several times throughout the show (btw, one of the dance moves was the classic “Chris Columbus directed this movie hands-on-cheeks scream”).
Both Harrys came into the crowd and sang/played guitar or sax at various points during the show. They really know how to work a crowd!
I don’t remember the exact order of songs, but they played “Wizard Chess”, “Save Ginny Weasley”, “The Foil” (they announced it was about their foil at school, “Draco Malfoil”), “Problem Solving Skillz” (dedicated to the library), and “My Teacher is a Werewolf” pretty early in the show. Also, they played a song about the enchanted ceiling in the great hall which I don’t remember hearing before. They remembered how they only have “two friends in the entire world” and that in summer before their fifth year they hadn’t heard from either of them and were very angry - then they played “Keeping Secrets from Me” in a very dramatic hard rock style. After that, one of the Harrys asked if we were ready to stick it to the man - everyone cheered. He talked about how Fudge wouldn’t believe that Voldemort was back and how he was lying to the public about it for his own political agenda, etc. etc. and that they “were only talking about wizarding world politics of course,” but suggested that maybe we could think of someone else who does things like that. They played “Cornelius Fudge is an Ass” and then said how “sometimes ‘the man’ comes in other forms. Sometimes it’s a woman who looks more like an amphibian,” and they played “Stick it to Dolores”.
Midway through the concert these two guys - one in a wizard hat and the other wearing Harry’s PoA movie Quidditch uniform started yelling things at random parts of the set. The guy in the wizard hat (he was also wearing jeans and a t-shirt) - a teenager - did a Dumbledore impression yelling out “Grryffindor!!!” and “Ten points for Gryffindor!!!” at random moments. He or the guy he was with also yelled out something about blast ended skrewts and thestrals as well. Those guys cracked me up.
The Harrys asked if we were ready for some political activism, and everyone cheered, so they told us they were going to sing the song “SPEW” or rather they were going to play it and go around and pick random audience members to give their most rocking “SPEW” into the microphone.
They played two new songs about cats, one was about when Hermione screwed up the polyjuice potion and how “Ron likes your whiskers” lol. The other was about being irritated by Mrs. Norris.
The older Harry gave a speech about how much he loves the movie Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and how one of the things he really loves about that film is how Bill and Ted have this band - not the greatest band - but they get a prophecy that their band will bring about world peace and so on. They were then comparing their band to Bill and Ted’s Wild Stallions as you know, Harry and the Potters aim to spread rock and love to defeat Voldemort :D
For their performance of “The Human Hosepipe”, one of the Harrys came out and sang the song specifically to this one girl in the audience. After that song the Harrys talked about how even if you share that intimate moment in the room of requirements that sometimes things don’t turn out, but maybe that’s okay because later on you might meet someone who’s better for you. Then the older Harry was saying how we all know how it is when you find a girl or a guy that you really like and things are going great, except for that one thing - Voldemort. They sang “Save Ginny Weasley from Dean Thomas” with a big break in the middle, in which they discussed how they went to Dumbledore’s office to get some advice on the Horcruxes and were surprised to find that he was blasting some DMX and that Dumbledore actually has a Hip Hop side to him, and they asked how many of us knew that - a lot did xD But then they wanted to know if we already knew that he breakdances too, and m any of us did lol. So older Harry performed a rap that Dumbledore shared with them about the four houses, it was amusing. Also, they said that Dumbledore told them that long ago Lily had played the Sax and now he wanted Harry year 4 to play the Lily Evens Edition Tenor Sax - and that James had been part of a rock band when he was in school, the Marauders who rocked Gryffindor common room all the time - thus he left Harry year 7 his old electric guitar. Dumbledore told them that these were the weapons they needed to use - plus the weapon of love - because Voldemort doesn’t understand the power of rock.
Oh! They played “This Book is so Awesome” and dedicated it to all books. They played “The Weasle” and younger Harry stopped it to ask older Harry about the song because nobody calls Ron ‘The Weasle’ and he said how that wasn’t very nice, and wanted to know if he becomes a jerk in the future. At that point, a lot of the audience laughed, and older Harry explained that people should call Ron ‘The Weasle’. Speaking of Ron, at some point they played “Smoochy Smoochy Pukey Pukey”. The Harrys told us to dance like we had lucky potion, or something like that, before playing “Felix Felicis”
They ended the set having us repeat after them various parts of the human cell, and other things like ATP, rock, love, and blood. Then they explained that’s the power that all of us have inside and that it will all come pouring out when they defeat all the death eaters and Voldemort - they made note that they meant the love will be what’s pouring out, not their blood, xD They talked about how they bet that Voldemort never was in a band, and that he never came out to see a band play at a library - so true XD. Then they finished up with, “The Weapon”.
I highly recommend to all my Harry Potter fan friends out there that you should go and check out their live shows, or at least check out their music - go to
their site to find out more about them.
