There's an ongoing discussion in the community regarding sexism annoyingly prevalent in the gaming industry~ which includes storyline, various gaming communities, character creation, online and offline encounters, and trash talking. Of course it pisses me off! Prior to the entry about discussing the foul language
David Jaffe used in describing the NGP, there is a post about the existence of a
site which is almost like a documentary on how male gamers can be such fucktards.
Granted, I've had my share of sexist insults and I have, in a way, developed a thick skin for it. I doubt it will go away soon, but I do hope that things turn around because comments like that do not produce an environment where female gamers get treated equally. Granted (again), that even females do make sexist insults at men~ it maybe because of the competitiveness that we lose track of what we say or maybe as a rebuttal to the ignorant loser who spat out the sexist comments in the fist place or I don't know.
But like I said, not everyone is like that. Back in the days when Counter-Strike was the game to play and a lot of computer shops popped up, me and my brother would always spend 15++ hours on one shop, playing the almost never-ending battle of Ts vs. CTs. The shop's filled with guys, maybe one or two girls playing somewhere in the mix. Despite learning how to curse in that area, most of the things they say are just disgusting. And some guys do notice that there is a girl kicking there asses but are respectful enough to use non-sexist insults at you. Eventually, management (who was also playing with us) had to call out the sexist idiots to either stop going to their shop and find somewhere else to play or change their insults to non-sexist ones. Surprisingly, it did work! I did learn new insults then, but at least they weren't sexist. It doesn't sit well with me (or probably any female gamer) to receive those words. It isn't my fault you keep eating my bullets, so shut up and stop eating my bullets if you don't want to!
I actually don't find it funny. I'm rather disturbed by it. Disturbed by how some female gamers do find them funny. Disturbed at how male gamers react to encountering female gamers. Disturbed at how that could be the future of the gaming community. I do appreciate the fact that the poster had a sort of end note mentioning not everyone would find such a thing humorous..
So I checked out the site. ...Augh, fuck it. I can't explain this one in English.
Putakte yan! Ganyan na ba talaga mga gamer ngayon? Bastusan na walang katapusan?! Pambihira, as in.
Rant done.
Is it too much to hope for a gaming community without the sexist remarks?
