Oh, people of Britain! Where for art thou brain cells?

Today, on the news, it showed one of their reporters going 'on patrol' with the Mountain Rescue team in Snowdownia.  Quite recently, they had rescued walkers from the side of a mountain who were unprepared, lost and stuck.  If you're interested, you can read it here.  Do you know what frustrates me most?  That, given the weather we're having at the ( Read more... )

Even fully kitted up, hiking Snowdonia and the Lake District in the weather we had last week is an Alpine, or even Arctic, endeavour. I've gone up Raise (next to Helvellyn) in *some* snow before, and turned back when it was getting harder to cut steps with my boots than was worth it (it was really getting into crampons and ice axe territory). Wouldn't have gone into the mountains last week - when it's -5 in the valleys it's going to be -10 to -12 on the tops even with no wind chill, and the snow will certainly be very heavy up there. Two people in proper kit got rescued from Coniston Old Man last week - they'd simply bitten off more than they could chew and got lost and benighted. It's a much bigger undertaking in winter. The thing is, you get a nice adventuresome feeling just walking round the fields and small hills - the extreme weather has come to you, no need to go off into the big mountains ( ... )

I think that story pretty much sums up my thoughts about the intelligence levels of people in this country! How funny is that story though? Thanks for sharing it with me, it has, in a strange way, brightened my evening.
