Today is an odd day to be a sci-fi fan

If you already heard the news, you must have known this was coming from me.

Heroes has been cancelled.

Kinda sucks, but oh well.

*carries on with life*

Yeah, surprisingly considering how much of an optimist I've been over this series and the continuation of it, I'm not that saddened or surprised by this. Whether I like it or not the show has been in decline for a while. I could get into one of my usual things about how Sylar should have been killed in season one, how they should have brought in more characters or at least given the characters they did have proper development, but I tire of repeating myself.

I loved this show and would have preferred things to end differently, but at least there was the dramatic cliffhanger and it didn't end at the lower level of quality we saw in Villains.
Besides I'm not gonna suddenly stop liking the show for what it was just because it was cancelled. It's not like the DVDs have disappeared from my shelf and out of existance due to the cancellation.

However I will probably distance myself from the fandom a little after this. Why? Because I discovered something last night. Some Heroes fans are BAT GUANO INSANE! Because I wasn't considering the cancellation of Heroes to be the most devastating thing in the world (more devastating than natural disasters or the death of Heath Ledger) I was officially a "hater" who was trying to mock people in their time of pain. This is on a website I have been a member of for almost three years discussing Heroes and having a laugh. So now I'm not a Heroes fan because I'm not sitting in a darkened room, swearing at NBC, drinking vodka straight from the bottle, reading my Heroes Graphic Novels and listening to "How Could This Happen To Me" by Simple Plan. Although part of that is because I don't like vodka straight, but it's mainly because of the whole "I'm not that sad about this" thing.
At least I wasn't the only one with a more mature "okay, it's over now. This sucks but we had a fairly good run" attitude. I know I shouldn't let idiots get me down or bother me (and what's weird is that they're probably saying the same thing about me) but it was 2AM and as you know I haven't been sleeping well lately, so I was bothered.

However, this isn't about the idiots. This is about the show.

No matter how it ended, the show still had one of the best first seasons out there. It was different, grabbed our attention and imagination and had some great characters to begin with. Writers Strike and bad executive decisions led to things which were not the best for the show or its fans, but I still think they got a bit of it back with later volumes like Fugitive and Redemption even though it wasn't enough to keep the show going.
Some viewers stuck with the show to the end and enjoyed it even in the low times, some people didn't stick with it and that's cool too. There are better shows out there, I'm not gonna ignore that. Heck, as an example last week on LOST I was utterly gutted and upset over the deaths of three favourite LOST characters (and Frank Lapidus). I hadn't watched this show for two years and it still got a bigger emotional reaction out of me than anything in Heroes recently or indeed the cancellation of the show itself, with the possibly exception of the proper final final end to Hiro and Charlie's story, although even then I wasn't that sad.

So to finalise. RIP Heroes. You started great, then lost it a bit, but you finished on an okay level.

However the important thing for me is that I liked you a lot, so thanks for the good times.

In other news (nope, I'm not done yet) Flashforward has also been cancelled. Now I've never really mentioned it on here but it's a newer ABC show which, whilst not fantastic, was still fairly interesting and entertaining. And it had Dominic Monaghan acting like a total douche which was always good watching. It was also something that most people in my house watched and so it does suck on that level. However hopefully they will have time to give the show an actual ending, rather than a cliffhanger. Although with this cancelled and LOST ending, what is even gonna be on ABC anymore?

What's really random and funny is Heroes being cancelled and LOST ending in the same month.

And Ashes to Ashes last night.......WOAH! I really can't wait to see what's gonna happen. And there was a shot of what looked like Same in Gene's office. GYAAAAAAH!!! I wanna know now! Stupid waiting a week.

And that's ending too.

Now that I think about it, pretty soon I'm not gonna have any more genre tv to watch. Man that's gonna suck.

Oh well.

Peace out

lost, heroes, telly
