I often get mad about such things, not usually on here; I've been good about not ranting. But I am convinced that our country's laws and culture are thoroughly broken. I believe this to be especially true in regards to our treatment of kids, children, young adults, minors, pre-majority persons, whatever the hell you want to call them.
Case and point:
12 year old arrested for doodling on the desk.
Yes there may be another side to the story but regardless, this is absurd! What the hell happened to detention? You know proper punishments that fit the God damned infraction; this kid is still serving an out of school suspension, even if she wasn't arrested, isn't this too much? How the hell does it come to this? It couldn't have been the first choice of action, or was it? School teachers and over concerned parents are so worried about "protecting the children" school boards seem to have been adopting zero tolerance policies. I may be wrong, my view point could be skewed by the media, but what I do know is this sort of thing should never be allowed to happen.
I am thoroughly convinced that our culture has become so rule obsessed that people like these cops and that teacher see no other option. In a way I believe its our way of removing all vestiges of personal responsibility; we leave our problems for the "system" to resolve. We see it every day in frivolous personal injury suits, politics, parents blame tobacco companies when their kids smoke, the general ass-hatted sense of entitlement the modern American carries on their smug grin. Its not just here, Its worse over the damned atlantic. British boyscouts forbidden from carrying pen knives. Bah, even in my day(about 10 year ago) you didn't get in trouble for a swiss army knife in middle school. Why are we afraid kids might hurt themselves, they will anyway even if you try to stop them. Just let them do it and learn.
In a way I wish there was something we could to smack that smug grin off of our country's face. I wish people could be people again, without some stupid system to tell them when they are right or wrong, take off the training wheels this is the world. Let parents be responsible for raising their own children, It's not the government's responsibility, nothing is. The government is a God damned illusion, people pay the taxes that make up our state and federal budgets, people rule people, people make laws, people decide to listen to them, this is a God-damned democracy for fuck's sake.
And to sum it up: Let kids be kids, It's their parent's job to raise them and punish them. Sure schools should give out the standard array of punishments, but the state of things are ridiculous. I can't stand to watch people cower in fear of all the "bad things" that might happen, and rely on our government to tuck us in at night. We've created one monster to protect us from another.
