He comes like wind at night.

Romario rises from his chair at the side of the bed, watching the lamp play a faint flicker of light on the black of his hair. Kyouya's eyes are narrowed, squinted as he glares at the bed.

"A herbivore. As always."

A raspy laugh floats from behind drawn back curtains. "You come, Kyouya."

All he gets is an irritated huff. Romario makes his silent retreat to the door, but a small sigh from his boss makes him linger in the room, just for a moment, a shadow born from the mansion's old stolidity.

He can't bear to leave.

"I'm going to die, you know," Dino speaks softly. His voice is weaker than it has been only this morning. Romario clenches his fists.

"That's what you get from being so weak," Kyouya scoffs but his voice trembles and Romario hates him a little for being that cruel. He has always been a little too distant, a little out of reach, but his boss has put up with it and look at where it has got him.

Alone, in the cold, master bedroom of a large, empty mansion which has seen better days. Without a wife to lie at his side and caress his face with tender affection. Without children to brighten his days and accept the overwhelming flood of his love. It’s all wasted on a heartless man who may as well be the guardian of ice instead of cloud.

“Everyone has done everything they can,” Dino says. There is a melancholic hint in his voice that drives Romario out of the room. He pauses in front of the door, drawing anxious looks from many members of the family crowding the hall.

He always thinks that he'll die first. His boss is young, not yet forty, and yet…

He remains outside until dawn, trying to ignore his knee’s aching joint and the fact that he’s old, old, old, and yet still lives. The Cavallone will fall into ruin. A successor has been chosen, a capable young man, a responsible distant relative, but still.

Not a worthy one.

Dino Cavallone breathes his last come morning, with a smile that ignores past regrets and future qualms. On his left ring finger is a ring with gleaming purple jewel, cracked at the edges. The skylark is nowhere to be seen.

Romario pulls the cover over the serene face and never feels more dead in his life.
