i think it would be fantastic if each player started as the simplest of life forms -- think something along the lines of a tadpole; no legs, no arms, no fins, outfitted only with the ability to evolve. the game could begin in an environment similar to the primordial ooze, that bit of frozen earth that melted to create the very first life forms.
as you move through the game, you can take certain elements of evolution, like wings, for instance. & these elements can help you pass through certain obstacles, or achieve an edge over other players (just as in life, where going to college will give you more job opportunities, or having life insurance will save you money if a tree falls on your house). if you have wings, you can fly over a forest, instead of passing through it. if you have hooves, you can cross the desert. if you have fins & gills, you can swim across the ocean.
the real beauty of this concept, though, is that by the end of the game, the most magnificent creatures will emerge, birds with horns & horses with scales & snakes with wings.
however, i don't have an idea for what you can do about the fork-in-the-road dilemma posed in the game of life, where you have to choose between college & the workforce.
&, so not to confuse yourself, you have to decide whether you want your animals to be realistic, or if you want fantasy creatures. (if you choose the latter, you can even add magic abilities in addition to natural ones). :)

i wish i could do fantasy creatures, but i don't my bio teacher would go for that... i wish she would.

maybe you could do herbivore/omnivore vs. carnivore
I had other ideas when I first read this but i can't remember them now.
