Fic.Exerpt: Extra Credit (NaNoWriMo)

Nov 06, 2008 16:08

I posted this on my NaNo info as an excerpt for my story (which has grown to about 3000 new words, today, woo) and thought I'd put it here too. Maybe I'll remember to keep doing this?

“Why do I get the sense that I’d been about a minute later, you would have gotten your nose flattened?” Will asked, and there was an edge to his voice under the joke that made Ben shrug his shoulders in apology.

“I have a natural charm,” Ben said.

“To piss off Sam by breathing?” said Will.

“It’s a talent,” Ben agreed.

Will shook his head, handing over the book.

“Thanks,” Ben added it to his pile. “I knew Sam should have gone out for soccer.”

Will glanced over to where Sam sat. He grinned, obligingly setting up the joke with a bland, straight face. It was his job, after all.

“I don’t know. There are probably rules about it when you’re as short as he is…”

“It’s not a problem” Ben returned. “He’d just have to be the ball.”

Fortunately, they were far enough away so Sam didn’t hear exactly why they were laughing. He scowled anyway and mouthed something at them.

“What’d he say?” Ben asked Will.

“Something tells me it wasn’t happy birthday."
