People find it disconcerting when I reply to their "Classical studies...huh...what are you gonna do with that?" with a "nothing." Generally they find it abnormal for a person to not want a definate career or any goal above reading some Apollonius and Plato this summer. Have friended you because you like Pindar and there aren't many of us. I'm afraid I almost never update my journal, and a lot of it is friends only anyway (mostly I just have it for using communities), but I am definitely prepared to exchange thoughts about Pindar.

Alas, I am but a lowly undergrad reading Pindar with a prof. as independant study. I haven't become academic enough about him and I'm still in the little girl "eeeeeeeeeeeeee" phase over the sublimity of his stuff. But I'm always up for talking about what little I know, and gathering as much as I can from someone who knows more.

I seldom update as well.

I stumbled across your entry while surfing through friends' friends lists.

And I think that you've perfectly expressed the way that many of us feel about classical studies. Thanks for putting it into words!

Heh, thanks, I was in a really irrate mood when I wrote it. I think six people had said "what are you going to do? teach?" and yeah... Ironically, after it's been put into Lj form, people say "good for you." Go figure.
