Blackout

My church is selling apple pies as a fundraiser, and yesterday we held a pie crust making session.  Given the state of our finances, and since I am on the finance committee, I decided it was my duty to support this, so I went.  I have never managed to get myself to help with this before, but it sounded fun, and it was.  I hadn't realized we were supposed to bring our own equipment, especially a pastry cutter and a large bowl.  (The rolling pins are needed for the pie making session.)  There were as many as 9 of us working for about 4 hours total, and we made enough crusts for 140 pies.  We streamlined a little this time by having one lady do nothing but measure out the Crisco.  It is most efficient to use your bare hands to do this, but if you want to go back and make pie crusts, then you have to clean your hands, so this step was really slowing us down.  This lady just had Crisco all over her hands for 4 hours, so now they are super moisterized!  I had to bring about 40 pie crusts home to put in my refrigerator until Thursday.

It was very windy while we were making the pies -- the weather from the midwest was arriving.  When I got home, the electricity was out.  After lunch we went out shopping for a while, and read our books.  I made sure I practiced my flute before it got dark.  It always amazes me how many things depend on electricity.  Although we have gas heat, and the thermostat is on a battery, the pilot light will not ignite without electricity, so the house was getting colder and colder.  I could have cooked dinner on the top of our gas stove, but decided I didn't want to cook in the dark, so we went to Bertucci's.  When we got home, the lights were on.  Yay!  I probably shouldn't have started the dryer to finish my last load of laundry, because 10 minutes later, BOOM!  The transformer in front of our house blew out.  This time it was only our street.  When I called up, they said it would be fixed by 10:45, so we decided to stick it out at home.  However, I was getting pretty cold, so I went to bed around 9.  At this point I found one last thing that depends on electricity.  We have a Sleep Number bed, and because it was so cold, it really needed to be inflated a little more.  However, the pump is electric, so, oh well.

This morning everything was back to normal.

Tonight we are going to see Wicked.  It is supposed to snow, but it hasn't started yet.  I hope we get home all right!
