We are having a clothing and stuff, swap/drive this weekend for the Pan 9er's and fluttr'er's at Redtail. And aside from the pan 9 disaster, I have been very much involved in the healing process of my 5 y/o cousin Avery who was very recently diagnosed with cancer. They have been attempting to give him a spinal tap to check for more leukemia cells, but the swelling in his back is too much. The Dr.'s are considering putting in something called an Omaya Reservoir. This is basically a port, that is put into the fluid-filled ventricle in Avery's head. This involves more surgery, to install the port, by putting Avery under general anethesia, drilling a hole through his skull, into the cavity just under the skull, where the spinal fluid is made. They then insert a straw-like tube, although small in diameter, with a covering, which goes under the skin of his scalp. They can then inject the chemo drugs into this port, and it goes directly into his spinal fluid via his head, as opposed to his spine. How awful does that sound!?! In addition, apparently this port typically stays in for the rest of a person's life, unless it becomes infected or there are reasons to take it out. Im going to try to be present for the procedure if he has to get it done.
