Plans for the future!

On the way back from Sweden, in the Copenhagen - Düsseldorf night train, a plan for the future was born. It happened shortly after I put down my copy of Going Postal to take a sip of water. The book lay opened beside me, cover upwards, I took that sip, grimaced at the horrible taste of Copenhagen tap water and twisted the cap back on the bottle.

Then, a German guy, Max, walked past my compartment, did a doubletake and stormed into the compartment, his finger pointing to the book that lay open, face up, beside me on the bench.

“That is a fantastic book!” He said.

Then we talked about Terry Pratchett, Discworld novels and the possibility of doing a Discworld play in University for, oh, two hours.

So, current plans for the future, apart from finishing my thesis and finding a way to work on the kids-and-theatre-education-thing, now also include the idea to translate and adapt one of the Discworld plays. And then produce it as well of course.

I’d prefer a book from the Watch series, Men at Arms perhaps, but some of the other novels have such good potential as well. But let’s see. A Watch novel, adapted to the stage, some Tim Burtonesque scenery, or perhaps something based on the illustrations by Michel Ocelot and preferably a single base set that needs only minor adjustments to become another place altogether. A compelling soundscape (no songs though, just sound and perhaps a bit of music), costumes with an edge…

Oh, it’s probably going to be just another dream but it could be such a good reality! *sighs* Whatever, I’m going to track down a copy of the Dutch translation and the theatre adaption of MaA and see what’s there. Text first, people later ;)

theatre, holiday, sweden, discworld
