on my way home from manchester, i have started listening to NPR again. i stopped for a little while because, well, i made myself a really kickass burned CD and just listened to it a lot. maybe too much. :)
anyway, tonight they were talking about underage drinking...not necessarily in college, because i think that the people that were on the show knew that colleges try to stop it as much as they can, but there's only so much you can do. they were talking about high school kids and the problem of drinking and how one third admitted to binge drinking. binge drinking meaning five or more drinks in one evening. then they were talking about how 3% of the parents of children who admitted to binge drinking (which i'm certain is VERY MUCH lowballing because most of the kids in high school would NEVER admit that) knew that their child did it. it also stated that more than half of all kids in high school drink on a regular basis. not binge drinking, but just...drinking.
now, i don't have a problem with this, as i started drinking when i was fourteen, but i had this...thing on the way home. when i was a CA, we did this little program for the people in whichever res hall i was a res lifer in at the time (all three staffs that i was a part of did this), and it was called "how drunk is drunk?" it involved taking two people of completely different sizes and obviously one was a girl and one was a boy, and they were both of age, and they basically sat in front of a huge group of residents and got wasted. they took breathalyzers every once in a while, and it was really informative.
my question is, WHY don't they do this in high schools? why not figure out a way to get this program into high schools so that teens can see the reality of what alcohol does to you, either binge drinking or not?
has no one come up with this idea? for serious?
it makes me want to start talking to principals of high schools and say "let me get ten of my friends together and we will do this program for your kids."
not scare tactics, reality. make these people drink until they fucking puke. then, show pictures. pictures of people that have died, what a liver looks like after a night of drinking, the liver of someone with cirrosis, things of that nature. why not fucking do it?
seriously. ten people. different sizes, different genders, all fucking drinking themselves silly. that way people will know what they look like when they're drunk and it will do one of two or more things:
1. they'll see that these people look reallyfuckingstupid and never want to be like that.
2. they'll say "hey, that looks fun. i'll try that." natural selection rearing its ugly head.
so i guess my question is....
who wants in?
