One of the things that amused me most about this ep was the sheer level of threat and counter-threat going on. I think I lost count of the number and combination of people attempting, promising or intending to kill each other. Wyatt attempts to kill Linc & Sucre, the General threatens to kill Wyatt, Alex very nearly does kill Wyatt. Gretchen gets a full bag of threats: Michael (indirectly, to Sara), Fang (implicitly, talking about what happened to her predecessor), Sara (obliquely - 'you'll pay'), T-Bag (directly) and Self (very directly). Fang and Self both also threaten T-Bag, who mildly threatens Trishanne. Gretchen suggests a planned threat to the whole of Team Scofield ('they won't be around long enough to collect') and Bellick threatens himself ('I've got a bad feeling about this' - dude, do not be tempting the universe like that!) Is there actually likely to be *anybody* left standing when the dust has settled?
Once Sucre had reassured Bellick that nothing was going to go wrong, I was convinced he was going to die. Especially after the flashback to Linc - sure, that showed the car crash plan, but they also made a point of having him say he was just about to get out and go straight--and we all know how that turned out. Seriously, people! Stop being so insistent that nothing's going to go wrong, that the plans will work and that you don't have brain tumours! Don't you know that it is just *begging* for trouble?
I couldn't help feeling bad for Roland, although he did bring it on himself. One mil seems a bit stingy as blood money goes, and what on earth in his experience with Wyatt/the Company made him believe it would be a 'legitimate business transaction'? Ah, Roland, you silly boy. I also can't help wondering how much the team's treatment of him contributed to it. Yes, he was a jerk, and no, he didn't have the shared history--but would it have killed them to have been a little less dismissive and aggressive, a little more inclusive? Perhaps Michael has got used to people who don't (or didn't) like him sticking by him because they need his skills--but certainly, once he made it very clear to Roland that he was off the team anyway, where is Roland's incentive to stay on side? I'm glad Michael stayed with him, at the end. I could understand Linc's 'leave him to die like a dog' reaction, considering he very nearly got Linc & Sucre killed, but still. The handclasp was a nice moment.
Sara--oh, Sara. She really is just holding herself together with spit and willpower right now, isn't she? Loved loved loved her hesitation over the morphine, and the flashback scenes were eerie and effective. Her field surgery skillz were awesome, as was her face-off with Gretchen. Who just cracked me up, with her 'whip me and we're good' offer - ah, Gretchen. You really don't understand these strange creatures called humans, do you? My favourite bit was when Self started getting in her face in the Gate office - 'you work for me now, skank'. Hee! I love that about Self, that he has no idea who he's taking on but he just goes for it anyway. Gretchen's face is absolutely hilarious--she can barely contain her amusement, and you can just see her thinking 'hmm, this one has spirit. I like him I think I'll have him stuffed.'
Michael--oh, Michael. Your denial is monumental and frightening, and I am very afraid it is going to bite you in the ass. I adored your lightning-fast unmasking of Roland's betrayal, and the sneaky laptop-tracking plan you put into place with Alex -- and how just saying his name was enough to instigate said plan. Please to not be losing these wonderful telepathic powers, k?
Alex--oh, ALEX. Dude, a *crowbar*. If the others hadn't been there to hold him off, Wyatt would be one big messy stain on the ground right now. And I don't begrudge him it, not one second of it, but I wonder -- did it help? He's been so tunnel-visioned on this, on getting Wyatt, but what happens afterwards? Even if he kills him, what then? I am so very, very afraid for what it might mean for Alex when this is done, that I almost want Wyatt to get away. That way, Alex can spend the rest of his life tracking him all over the world, helping out the people he's damaged and occasionally calling on Michael for hot sex assistance. Oh, ALEX.
So the Company's plan is to cause an economic collapse and thereby take over the country? Hmmm. ::looks suspiciously at world news:: And Scylla is more than just the cards, huh? Presumably it involves the printing presses for the money, but I actually prefer
sol_se 's hypothesis of the Giant Space Death Ray. That would be *much* more fun. I wait with bated breath :-)
