I don't care about the plot (although I suppose there will have to be one)

It’s her eighteenth birthday and her brother is dead.

(Not literally, he walks around their home, and not as a ghost, he kisses her cheek and holds her close. But he is not the boy who thought he was a man who died. The boy whose grave she spoke to, the boy who she cried over, the boy who died at the bottom of the ocean.

No he is something new.

He moves differently and his words come out wrong and she smiles at him and he smiles back and neither one is real.)

Tommy is there of course. Older than most of the party guests but enjoying the open bar.

He is with her when she blows out the many candles on her cake.

He holds her close as she hugs him when she gets her car, something he has nothing to do with, and he lets her squeal in happiness in his arms. His grin is as big as her own, his lips full as he bites down on them in shared happiness.

He slips her alcohol, though they both know he doesn’t need to (she’s Thea Queen after all and this is her party, this is her world), and she drinks it all up.

He is not her brother.

She says it over and over in the years past.

But he is in all the ways the matter, all the ways that Oliver never was and still isn’t. And he keeps her close to his side and holds her up, and dances with her on the dance floor a little too close, but it doesn’t matter because Thea is and always has been moving closer to him.

(When she is fifteen she has her party and Oliver is not there and her father is not there and her mother is a ghost dressed up as though she was a person.

Walter smiles at her as he gives her the gift that he picked out supposedly with her mother and he is the closest thing she has to family there.

She gets drunk on vodka and scans the crowd for someone, anyone, who will supply her with something stronger. She stumbles her way through the throng of people who call her Thea Queen, because that’s all she’ll ever be to them, and past them into an empty room.

Thea stumbles, but her stilettos do not break beneath her feet. She’s better than that. She’s a Queen.

Tommy finds her with a bottle of water in one hand, aspirin in the other, and more vodka tucked under his arm.

They toast to life. And it’s a sad pitiful toast and both their eyes are red from alcohol and unshed tears.

She kisses him with alcohol on her tongue and for a moment he lets her, even brings his hands up to her hair. But then Tommy is pulling away and he places the bottle of water in her hand before he walks away.

Thea sees him drinking the vodka as he leaves.

Thea swallows the aspirin and wishes it was something stronger, drinks the whole bottle of water, one sip of a time, the taste of Tommy still on her tongue.)

The party lasts for hours and hours and Thea does not tire out.

She keeps dragging Tommy back to the dance floor, and he lets her each time, intertwining their fingers along the way. The space between them becoming smaller and smaller.

Oliver is still there maybe.

She doesn’t know. Doesn’t care.

Thea had found a new brother after all. One that gives her alcohol and aspirin and lets her grind her hips into his, and she has never wanted anything more.

Thea had found a new brother who she will declare with perfect malice isn’t her brother at all.

Thea has found a brother whose lips will touch hers and she will not let this one slip away from her. She will hold him close, so close that if he drowns she will drown with him. She will swallow the same water and it will taste like him as they claw at the world around them fighting to survive.

She has dug her nails into Tommy, has drawn blood, and licked her hands to taste it, to make him a part of her.

her mother is a ghost dressed up as though she was a person

OUCH

I have a lot of feelings about how Thea raised herself and at times her mother at the same time. a twelve year old girl who's mother wouldn't get out of bed and Thea with no one to talk to about her dead family.

thea queen is a queen, first and last, and always

Never more accurately has a name been given.

BLESS YOUR CONTINUED EXISTENCE

bless you and this ficathon and all the thea/tommy stories that have come of it.

My eyes are full of tears that cannot fall. My poor, wounded, bruised heart.

Thea had found a new brother after all. One that gives her alcohol and aspirin and lets her grind her hips into his, and she has never wanted anything more.
