The 10 Songs Meme
1. Pick a character, pairing, or fandom you like.
2. Turn on your music player and put it on random/shuffle.
3. Write a drabble related to each song that plays. You only have the time frame of the song to finish the drabble; you start when the song starts, and stop when it's over. No lingering afterwards!
4. Do ten of these, then post them.
1. La Vita E - Nek
Lyrics Ryo was never good at sap. Those that knew him knew he didn’t care for the stuff or put much stock in it; those that knew him well knew he was probably sappier than anyone else in all of JE.
There was a reason he made “Code” his solo song, after all.
But random symbols weren’t enough to hide the true gooeyness he needed to get out of his system when it came to Shige.
“You want to learn Italian?”
“Well, why not? Romance languages are good to know, aren’t they?”
“I guess… but this is kind of… random, you know.”
Ryo shrugged. It made sense to him.
2. Day After Day - Okiayu Ryoutarou (Couldn't find lyrics for this)
They didn’t have lulls often; not at the same time, not together. Somehow they managed to find routines in their hectic lives as pop idols. Maybe they weren’t like the routines other couples had, like helping each other with breakfast or dancing around each other in front of the same bathroom mirror, but they had long since learned to take stability where they could find it.
Ryo always called between 5:00 and 5:16 PM. People didn’t question Nishikido Ryo’s need for a quick bathroom break - people rarely questioned anything he did.
Shige always left a meal out for him on the nights he would be home late - even if Ryo had told him he wouldn’t be back till the next day. Because Ryo was learning to make time.
3. Blow Me Away - Breaking Benjamin
Lyrics Everyone knew Ryo was a JE favourite, both in the jimusho and with the fans. He had so much exposure, and was so distinctive in every way it was impossible for him to be anything but ridiculously popular.
But whatever line of fans waited for him, however many job offers his manager presented him with each morning, he took everything with the same rock steady façade. In spite of what some people thought, it took incredible amounts of strength to stay alive in this business.
And Ryo so often left the others in the dust, looking like he expected nothing short of it.
4. Night Drive - Jimmy Eat World
Lyrics It was easier to do this in the dark.
The windows were tinted perfectly; they saw everything that went on around them, while no one had the faintest clue as to what went on inside.
Faces were recognizable; names were recorded; cameras were everywhere. It was enough to be alone together in the car if it meant they could get the thrill and keep some kind of privacy.
They had gotten it down to a fine art, and it got more fun every time. And if anyone noticed their recent hobby for going on drives night after night, no one said anything about it.
5. The Plan - Nada Surf
Lyrics Act natural. Normal. Don’t draw attention to it.
They were civil in the halls if they passed by. They didn’t go out of their ways to say hello or offer each other company or food. Ryo still called him ugly.
Shige was obedient, because it made sense and was for the best. So he was surprised when one day Ryo pulled him into the bathroom suddenly, locked the door behind them and crushed him up against the nearest wall.
“What-what about acting normal?” Shige asked in between gasps as Ryo sucked on his neck.
“This is normal now,” is all Ryo growled out before taking Shige’s lips and dipping his hands down to tug at his silver belt buckle.
6. Open Up Your Mind (Remix) - Mirai
Lyrics “I still don’t get the whole invisible cat thing.”
Shige shrugs. “You don’t have to. A lot of people don’t get it.”
Ryo’s frown is almost palpable. From across the entire living room. It’s silent for half a minute, and finally Shige looks up. Satisfied, Ryo crosses the room and plops himself next to the younger man on the small sofa.
“Explain it to me.”
Shige stares at him through his glasses for a moment, then takes them off and shuts his book. He’s never fully related the story of how Wagahai came to be to anyone, not even Koyama. His best friend is open enough to just accept the invisible cat’s existence and play along; he doesn’t need to know the deeper reason for Wagahai’s presence to know that there is one.
Ryo wants to understand. Shige smiles softly, and indulges him.
7. Shiosai - Kosugi Juurouta (Couldn't find lyrics; title means "Sound of Waves")
The night before they’re set to leave Hawaii and head back to Japan, Ryo finds Shige leaning against the white balcony alongside the third floor of their hotel, staring out at the ocean while the wind blows gently, warmly in his face.
“It’s been a fun shoot, hasn’t it?” Shige says without turning around. He knows Ryo’s footfalls.
Ryo waits a beat, then joins Shige in staring at the ocean against the railing. “I dunno, aren’t you the one who wiped out trying to run for the commercial filming?”
Shige smiles wryly at the memory. “I didn’t waste the hot dog, at least.”
“I’m sure the director was glad he didn’t have to waste another dollar-fifty on you,” Ryo says. The sound of the waves lapping gently below them makes him remember their time here is slowly ticking away, and he grows impatient. He leans forward, presses their lips together for the first time since they’d arrived, makes it last.
8. Kiri no Mukou de - Morikubou Shoutarou (Couldn't find lyrics; title means "On the Other Side of the Mist")
There is a fog that separates them from each other, keeps them from really seeing each other. It’s been there since the beginning, put in place by everything they didn’t have in common or see in each other, everything they didn’t care to understand about each other. But after a good, long while, it’s only there because they maintain it carefully. They have started to sense something on the other side, something very tempting and crushing and wonderful, something dangerous and painful. They don’t want to see what’s on the other side of that mist.
But before they realize it, the sun has burned it away on its own while they aren’t looking. And when they finally look back at where it’s been all these years, they see only each other.
9. Mienai Chikara - Akiyama Miki
Lyrics Shige is fine by himself.
He was fine by himself for a long, long time. He needed to be; he couldn’t survive as a Johnny if all he did was rely on other people. But when he was placed in NEWS along with Kusano and Koyama, he clung to them more than ever in this strange new group.
Years later he would remember the days when he spent much of his time around Ryo in fear of his older, far more experienced bandmate; and he would smile. It was much easier to see from this side of the spectrum how every insult, every tease, every prank and humiliating situation Ryo had put him through had slowly made him into the man he was today - one capable of waiting patiently for the time when he and Ryo could be together again, could live his life happily knowing just who and what was waiting for him.
10. Paper Boats - Nada Surf
Lyrics The sense of inevitability drags them both down. They both know it is only a matter of time before something will happen to ruin what they’ve carved out for themselves. It’s too fragile, too endangered to last forever.
It’s moments like these that seem heavy, burdened with extra meaning in the mundane. Ryo gets on the train to Osaka, and Shige sees him off. He knows Ryo is perfectly used to getting on the train by himself, as Shige is usually still asleep by the time he has to leave. But Shige knows Ryo needs a little more support than usual today.
It’s not something they can be happy about; but Ryo was adamant, so vehement in his argument last night that plates were broken against the kitchen floor. It is his decision; Shige knows he will come under fire for this, possibly even more so than Ryo, but Ryo has made up his mind.
He is giving up Osaka.
