That smile is ridiculous, he tells himself. It’s sunny. There’s no other word for it, in the end, and it makes him kind of embarrassed that he can’t think of one for all his extensive vocabulary.
But sunny just fits. It fits. It fits him.
He’s hopeful; he’s earnest; he’s warm; he’s infectious; he’s unstoppable.
And, yes, above all else-Massu is Yellow.

Arashi gets asked a lot-‘which member loves the band the most?’ And Shige wonders if it’s because of their unstable past that NEWS doesn’t field the same question. They just have to bring the subject up themselves.
And sure, he’ll agree that Yamapi is probably the most openly-mushy about NEWS-ai, especially after getting their esteemed leader drunk. (Not that anyone else couldn’t say the same about him in that particular circumstance; but he doesn’t like remembering that.) But if there’s any one person he had to pick, the one who has NEWS so ingrained into his psyche as to constantly be thinking of ways to improve performances and make their fans extra happy even on off days-even on hiatuses-it could only be Massu.
Sometimes he thinks he’d like to catch up to Massu’s unadulterated love for and desire to give to their fans; but then, he doesn’t have the million-watt energy Massu does to keep that up and still be alive.

To say that getting asked out by Masuda Takahisa-fellow bandmate and longtime friend-was a surprise for Shige was putting it lightly. Though he wasn’t sure if it was more surprising or annoying, because he’d been working himself up to doing that himself for weeks only to have all his hard work and planning and attempting blow up in his face and come to NOTHING with one simple word:
“Okay.”

There are no mind games with Massu, Shige learns very quickly. Just as he learns there are some things worth fighting about with the stubborn man, and that topping is not one of them.
The first time happens the same night of their first date, and since they’ve known each other for seven years or so already Shige figures it’s okay just this once-though it’s kind of hard to argue when full pink lips are kissing yours hard enough to bruise, just like the door handle in your back surely will by tomorrow. Massu’s shorter, yes, he knows; but he’s also much stronger, especially after his stupid ranger drama that bumped him up to superhuman level, but the way his smooth hips pump to push himself as deep inside as he can while holding them both upright keeps Shige screaming and coming and thinking that maybe it’s okay-just this once.

It was something they accepted upon entering this business, even more directly with the first time they were given microphones to fight a chorus of other boyish (girly) voices to try and be heard: to be an idol, you have to sing embarrassing songs about rabu.
Very rarely are any JE songs written in a style favoured by the JE boys that sing them, and it wasn’t news that Shige was always more of a rock and punk fan. But as an idol, he’s gotten used to looking like he enjoys embarrassing songs and more than that, looking like he’s putting feeling behind them when singing them.
Right now, on stage in front of a crowd of eight-thousand people, he’s trying to decide if the way Massu’s staring at him while singing his part is supposed to be a joke, and if he’d be more worried if it wasn’t.

Funnily enough, they argue about it later. Massu’s so sure-so secure-that he can just do things like that, in front of their bandmates, in front of their fans, in front of the cameras. It scares Shige because Massu’s young and he’s even younger, they’re both young and stupid and supposed to fuck up while they can. Massu doesn’t talk to him for days.
Shige stares at his phone for a full minute before scrolling through his contacts, starting to dial his mum and finding himself holding the phone up to his ear and waiting for Koyama to answer instead.
They talk for over an hour, because Koyamama makes time for his babies and needs them to be happy when they sleep otherwise they’ll get scary dreams. Eventually he calls Shige stupid (but nicely), and eventually Shige feels better about it because at least now he has one person who can forgive his stupidity.

It’s raining and they’re walking together; Massu’s got the umbrella because he cares more about his clothes. He wants ice cream. Why he wants ice cream on a rainy day is beyond Shige, but they haven’t had much free time lately.
It’s raining and Massu pouts every time he feels a droplet bounce onto his sweater in spite of his alien-umbrella, but they turn the corner that will take them to the ice cream shop and find the path half-flooded. Massu smiles and takes off with a leap, and Shige watches the rain water part for Massu’s yellow and green rain boots, never noticing the slow smile that creeps across his own damp face as he follows.

He knows Shige’s always been good on his own; not a loner, but okay alone. It just takes a while for it to click that that’s the reason Shige’s weird about this thing they’ve got. And when it does, it’s very randomly on Shige’s couch after a car commercial neither was paying attention to while waiting for their variety show to come back on.
He sits up from where he’d been resting in Shige’s lap to stare at him with something akin to horror and then a pout. “Shige. You just want to be strong, don’t you?”
Shige, rightfully taken aback by the question, blinks slowly. “Um.”
Massu sighs heavily before flopping back down into Shige’s lap. “Stupid. This is why you should respect our senpai more and listen to their songs too.”
Massu feels accomplished for having sorted that out; Shige stays awake an extra two hours that night trying to imagine the other 90% of that conversation.

Shige has an endless supply of words. Words, such complicated things; they always appear simpler than they really are. He’s admired for knowing how well to weave them together. So it’s weird to be struck speechless by anything, or anyone. And yet how often these days does he find himself silent in front of Massu? He has that itchy, heavy feeling, the one that comes from having something to say and not knowing how. Or what.
He doesn’t even know what he’s trying to say that makes all of his pretty little words dry up.
The way Massu’s smiling at him right now. He has a word for that. ‘Disturbing.’
“What?” He frowns.
Massu just beams, then attaches himself to Shige’s side. “Me too.”
