I have fond memories of dancing around the maypole with ribbons that would plait their way down to the end! Then we would decorate it with flowers and such. I learned it as a fertility festival in elementary school. :)

I have an Asatru friend up here that still gathers with her group out at a farm to celebrate.

I have always been a "red root" guy and turning May 1 into "Law Day" in the United States, only served to increase my contempt for both.

Inequality is the disease of "progress"

I always thought there was more truth in the title of George's book Progress and Poverty than there was between the covers.

Whenever i read what is supposed to pass for "scripture" in somebody's religion or culture, i ask myself "what were things like at the time this was written?" It often turns out that the author was trying to make things better.

yeah, all around ex-USSR today was a huge celebration with picnics in all parks, funny how the official Soviet 1st of May's "Labour Day" eventually just became a celebration of Spring :)

I think the USSR was state capitalism , although I was a member of the British Communist Party for years .
