Unexpectedly, the storm that was supposed to come through yesterday blew in over the hills this afternoon, and suddenly while the barbecue was cooking we were watching the flashes of lightning, listening to thunder rolling round and crashing overhead, and rain pattering on the roof.
Thankful that we have the covered outdoor area for the barbecue, and the table and chairs that were there, and the covered deck, but eventually as it poured on and Pete and I communicated by text because the rain was too loud on the roof and it was too wet to be going between the house and the barbecue, everyone had had a main course and water was coming into the outdoor space too fast to keep it out, and we made a run for it, through the rain streaming off the gutters, food covered up, barefoot, back into the house where the cakes were. And still it poured on, for a good 2 hours before it thought about letting up a bit. I can still hear the rain pattering now, at midnight, with our rainwater tanks overflowing. The garden needed it, for sure.
Rain or not, we had a good time. The spa has been enjoyed, the sofa didn't eat anyone and the cricket kept us entertained for an hour or two late on. The food was awesome (thanks Russ) and somehow they left all the best cake, a single plate of cold meat and some salad to take me through the week.
The house is tidy, the only signs of our party a full recycling box and the glasses stacked by a running dishwasher ready to go in tomorrow morning. And the esky, that'll go when the guys come back over to collect their cars. And I wind down, as Pete has headed for bed, to try and get enough sleep to play the hymns tomorrow morning with a reasonable level of accuracy.
Happy Australia Day, lovelies. We hope you're having as much of a happy day as we did.
