The memory of travelling through the sand dunes of Tibet is still strong in my head but since then (plus a short week-long trip to Moalboal, Cebu, in mid-October for some unadulterated pristine scuba-diving), the itch to pick up my backpack and go! has been clawing at my heart yet again. Thus, I plan to make full use of the upcoming Christmas holidays to make an overland trip from Hong Kong to good 'ol Singapore.
A few rules:
#1. Only one flight allowed
#2. Modes of transport I will use: buses, trains, subway, tuk-tuk, cars, bicycle, on foot.. essentially, anything that doesn't fly
#3. I have to do this within 11 days
I printed out a poor-quality map of South-east Asia and started planning. Obviously I have to go through China, which is a real pain in the ass because I'm still not ready to face the horrible toilets and the Dolby Surround matrix-encoded spitting sounds. The best way to get around that is to leave civilisation as late as possible but early enough to catch the overnight 4:02pm train from Guangzhou to Nanning. Once there, it's half a day of travelling by train, motorcycle taxi and bus to the border of Vietnam - that's Pingxiang for me.
And from there, I will try for myself how good real pho really is!
