Who: Sam and Mercedes
When: Tuesday January 17, 2012
Where: WMHS Library
What: Flash Happens
Mercedes was sitting in the library, working on her biology project. This grading period was on genetics and they had to do Punnett Squares on their blood types, hair and eye colors, and at least one genetic trait such as a widow’s peak or hitch-hiker’s thumb. It wasn’t hard, just tedious. They also had to pick one trait to research and find famous people that had the same trait and do a report on one of them. She secretly hoped someone cool had naturally curly hair.
Miss Caplan sent Sam to the library to pick up a few materials for the lesson. He hadn’t really been sure of where the library was, but eventually he’d found it. He leaned against the counter, looking around the room as he waited for the librarian to retrieve his items. His eyes fell on Mercedes and he waved. They’d hung out for a bit on Saturday, but he hadn’t really had a chance to talk to her since.
Mercy groaned softly to herself when she realized she needed to find another book for her project. She looked up and then smiled when she saw Sam wave at her. She waved back and then got up from the table. Sam was a really cool guy, and he wasn’t too shabby at video games. “Hey.” She said softly as she met him at the counter.
“Hey,” he greeted her back happily. “What’re you doing in here? I thought you had a class.” His brow furrowed a little. In boarding school, they’d had a recess period, but that was usually during the morning. He was still getting used to how public school worked.
“Working on a project. The teacher gave me a pass to come here since I had already done the classwork.” She tilted her head and looked at him. “What are you doing in here?”
Sam shrugged. “I’m getting something for class, but I don’t think the librarian knows where it is. She’s been gone for a while. Should I be worried? She’d like....super old. I don’t want her to get hurt or lost or something.”
She pursed her lips slightly, standing up on her toes to see if Mrs. Coleman, the school librarian was okay. She didn’t see her anywhere. “Usually teachers will have the books right here by the counter with your name on them.”
Peering over, Sam tried to see where the woman went. He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. Everything went fuzzy and then black.

Pain was the first thing Mercedes registered as she opened her eyes a little. The second thing was noise. Or was that her ears ringing? She groaned softly as she tried to sit up, wincing as she looked around. What the hell happened? “Sam?” She whispered, not wanting to look like she was crazy if she had just passed out because she was dehydrated or something.
“Huh?” Sam answered groggily. The light felt painful against his eyelids, but they fluttered open quickly. “Mer...cedes?” He tried again, clearing his throat. He sat up slowly and rubbed his head. There was a knot. Man, it hurt.
“Are you okay?” She asked softly. The side of her face hurt so bad. She must’ve hit it when she hit the floor. There were other people in the library waking up too. Maybe some type of gas leak had happened? This school was old as dirt, probably had pipes laid by the Romans.
Sam tried to nod, then groaned when a sharp pain shot through his head. “Yeah, I think so.” His eyes were a little bleary as he looked around. Other people seemed to have fainted as well. At least, he thought he’d fainted. He didn’t really know. It hadn’t ever happened before. “What happened?”
“I...I don’t know.” She said as she reached up and grabbed onto the edge of the counter to pull herself up. She felt like she was going to throw up. “It wasn’t just us. I wonder...should we check on everyone?” The thought of moving did not sound appealing, but she was scared to be still too.
He’d joined the Scouts when he was away at boarding school. So, he was prepared for emergencies, but he was a little worried. Nothing like this had ever happened in life before. What if it was a terrorist attack like 9-11? What if they passed out again? These things kept running through his mind, but he didn’t say it out loud. “I’ll go check. You just stay here.”
She may have hit her head, but she wasn’t helpless. Even though it was kinda nice he had suggested she stay, must be a southern thing. “I’ll go check on Mrs. Coleman and the library aides in the back.” She said as he was heading off.
Walking through the library, he helped students to their feet and they all looked just as confused as he felt. He hadn’t been in Lima very long. but he was pretty sure this sort of thing wasn’t a common occurrence.
