Log: You want me to join?

Who: Mike and Tina
When: Monday, January 16, 2012
Where: Lima Mall
What: Ice cream Monday!

Mike pressed a kiss to his mother’s cheek before unbuckling his seatbelt and getting out of his seat. “Yeah, I’ll text when I want to go home. Yes, I’ll be careful. And yes, I won’t spend all of my money. I’ll be fine, Ma. See you later.” He gave one last wave to his mother before shutting the car door and stepping back. His mother’s black sedan didn’t move and he knew it wouldn’t move until he was well inside the mall. It kinda sucked in his opinion and he couldn’t wait for May when he’d finally turn 16. His dad had already promised him a car and he was excited. With a smile, he stepped through the doors.

He shot a quick text to Tina to let her know he arrived. Chiki, I’m here! Where are you?

Tina’s phone buzzed and she pulled it out of her pocket, a smile immediately coming to her face as she saw who it was from. She quickly texted him back. I’m already sitting at our table, Rink. :)

He quickly pulled up the new message and read through it. Of course she was already here. Cool. Omw. :D With one last text to Tina, he pocketed his phone and made his way to the ice cream parlor. Seeing Tina at their table, he grinned and waved. “Hey, Chiki!” He greeted before dropping down on the seat in front of her.

“Hi Rink!” She grinned widely at him. “How goes it?”

“It’s going good.” He replied. Classes were off to a good start and basketball season was up next. “You?”

“I can’t complain,” Tina answered and that was mostly true. Glee was going well if you discounted Rachel being Rachel and sure she’d already been slushied twice since school started back up but it wasn’t so terrible, you kind of got used to it.

“Yeah...” Mike had now taken to playing with the napkin on the table. “So...” He didn’t know how to say this so he thought it would be better to just...say it. “Glee club, Chiki? Really?”

Tina blushed and shrugged. She’d been in Glee since before Christmas but she’d never mentioned it to Mike, she was kind of embarrassed about it. Rachel’s recent posters made it impossible to fly under the radar anymore though. “I like it,” she finally admitted.

Well, he couldn’t really argue with that. But the slushies though? He was sure Tina didn’t like those. “I’m sorry ‘bout the slushies...” It wasn’t like he could do anything to stop those. He felt bad about it.

She shrugged again. “That’s not your fault Rink.” She could tell just by looking at him that he felt bad and she wasn’t going to have any of that. Since they were little she’d always got the impression that he sometimes tried to put himself in the role of her protector, she’d never forget the night he’d found her at the park and he’d walked her home, but high school was different and it was unrealistic to expect that he could do anything about their peers. “Seriously. Stop being sorry, it’s okay. Promise.”

“No! It’s not okay. Slushies hurt like a...well they hurt. And they’re cold. And it’s not fun getting hit with them.” He had yet to be slushied but it wasn’t hard to deduce that.

“It’s not fun but it’s not like the end of the world,” Tina shrugged again, trying to down play how much getting slushied suck. “So...what kind of ice cream are you getting today?” She changed the subject to something much more pleasant. Ice cream was her favorite.

He didn’t like how Tina changed the subject. Mike felt there was more talk to be had in terms of Glee Club and slushies but he let it slide. More talking meant no ice cream. “Well, I’m...in a red sort of mood.” He liked the color red. It was his favorite. Also, he felt like he was getting influenced with the New Year preparations at his house. “Red velvet? You?”

“Hmm...red velvet is so tempting. Why do you always have to come up with ice cream orders that sound so good?” Tina wagged her finger at him playfully. “I think I’m going to have strawberry though, I’ve been craving it for awhile.”

“Because I’m awesome like that!” Mike replied with a smile, thumping his chest as if to prove the point. “But strawberry sounds good too.”

“Duh. Of course you are,” Tina rolled her eyes at him teasingly. Mike really was awesome, it really just was that simple. “Now let’s get ice cream my tummy is all hungry. It’s been waiting for this all day.”

“Well, c’mon then! We don’t want your tummy to revolt on you!” He stood up and gestured towards the counter. “Lead the way!”

Tina got up and led the way to the counter, placing her order and moving to side to wait for it. She rocked on the balls of her feet while she waited for Mike to order and move closer to her. “So how is basketball practice going? How do you think the season is going to pan out?”

Mike placed his order, two scoops of Red Velvet on a waffle cone and went over to where Tina was waiting. “Well, I think we have a good team so I’d like to think we’re gonna win some games this year.”

“That’s awesome,” Tina grinned. “I already have my sign all ready and everything,” she told him as she turned to grab her strawberry ice cream cone.

Awesome! Mike liked the signs Tina brings to the games. It felt like he had his own personal cheerleader! “Yeah? Those signs are awesome! I bet the other guys are jealous because they don’t have anything like that.” He grinned at the server when he got his ice cream. “Back to our table we go!”

Tina was glad that Mike liked her signs and wasn’t embarrassed by them or anything like that. She knew she wasn’t exactly popular, in fact she was the exact opposite of popular, so she knew that him being friends with her might not always be the easiest for him. She licked at her ice cream cone as they maneuvered their way to their table. Taking her seat again she paused from eating her ice cream for a second. “Strawberry does not disappoint. How’s the red velvet?”

“It’s very...red velvet-y.” Mike grinned as he happily licked his cone. Ice cream was so so awesome. Ice cream with Tina was awesome-r.

Tina laughed. Mike always had the most unique ways of describing things. She ate some more of her ice cream for a bit, not minding sitting in silence.

He was content to just sit there and eat his ice cream. It was one of the nice things about spending time with Tina. It was okay if they just sit there and not talk. He liked that a lot since he wasn’t very talkative. “So...tell me more about Glee? Finn’s also part of it...”

“Right. I can’t really figure out why he joined but he did,” Tina shrugged. That was one mystery she had yet to crack. “I really like singing and I get to do that there. There’s dancing too. It’s fun. Even if Rachel is kind of a pain most of the time. My friends Artie and Mercedes are in it too, so that kind of offsets Rachel’s annoying-ness.” Tina kind of wanted to ask Mike if he would join, he was the most amazing dancer she’d ever seen, but she wasn’t sure about mixing her friend groups and, besides, a part of her was worried he would say no.

“That uh...sounds fun.” Mike didn’t know what else to say and just went back to his ice cream.

Tina realized she wasn’t doing a very good job of describing Glee club. “It really is though, Rink. Singing is like...so awesome. Almost as awesome as ice cream. Almost,” she exaggerated the last almost. “I don’t know how to describe it. It’s like...” She tried to come up with the right words but couldn’t. “What does it feel like when you’re dancing?”

“I don’t know how to sing,” he mumbled into his ice cream. He sang in the bathroom but that didn’t count. He perked up a little at the mention of dancing. Mike loved dancing. “It’s....it’s...” Okay, he didn’t know how to explain it in a way Tina would understand. “It’s dancing. I love dancing.”

Tina smiled. Mike always had this glow or something when he talked about dancing. She loved how happy it seemed to make him. She wished he would do it more. Maybe...maybe she should just ask him about Glee. After all, he would get to dance there and she wondered if that would make him happy. She still wasn’t sure though. What if he said no? Would that bother her? “See how hard it is to describe something you love? But it’s an awesome feeling. A super awesome feeling,” she tilted her head to the side and watched him a second, still trying to decide about asking him to join Glee. “You know Glee isn’t just singing though, right? Glee is about performing. Dancing is a big part of that.”

He knew that. Otherwise, they’d just be a normal choir. That’s what they do in choir, stand and sing. Glee Club was a bit different. “Still. There’s singing, Chiki. I’m not good at that.”

“How do you know you’re not good at it?” Tina narrowed her eyes at him a bit, feigning suspicion. “I bet you so are good and you just think you’re not.”

“Oh, Chiki. I know I’m not good at it. Let’s leave it at that.”

Tina frowned, she didn’t like Mike getting down on himself. She let it go though. “You know, I don’t think you really have to be able to sing to be in Glee club. It’s not like Rachel let’s anyone else sing much anyway,” Tina laughed a bit, it really wasn’t all that funny but there wasn’t much else to do but laugh when it came to Rachel most of the time. “What we really need is good dancers. Finn is...well, frankly, he’s terrible at dancing, and Artie’s got moves but he’s hampered by the chair, and Kurt...well he’s Kurt.” That was sort of like asking him but not really. She’d wait and see, gage his reaction before asking for real.

That sounded a lot like asking him to join Glee club. Was that what Tina was saying? It wouldn’t hurt to ask. “...are you saying what I think you’re saying? You want me to join?”

“Well...maybe?” Tina smiled shyly. “I just like seeing you dance, a lot, and if you join Glee you would get to do that a lot. Like a lot, a lot. And we would be in it together. I think it would be fun. I just...I understand if you don’t want to though...” She spoke quickly, pausing at the end to take a breath and then deciding not to go on.

“I don’t know...” He replied, trailing off. The guys on the team didn’t like it when Finn joined the team. They only took it easy because he was the quarterback. If he were to join, he’d get harassed, slushied even. He wasn’t sure if he was ready for that. But thinking about it more, it would probably be nice to be in Glee with Tina. He’d get to dance outside his room! Still, he was unconvinced.

I don’t know, wasn’t the same as no and that gave Tina the incentive to push a bit harder. “I just thought it would be nice for other people to get to see you dance. For you to actually get to dance on a stage with an audience. You’re so talented that it’s such a shame that more people don’t get to see you,” she meant that honestly and she hoped that Mike could tell that. “Plus, you joining would mean more Rink and Chiki time and I can always use more Rink and Chiki time. Since high school started we haven’t had as much of that, you know. Remember how we used to hunt pirates all of the time? This could be like that...just with singing and dancing!” She smiled at him hopefully.

Mike bit into his waffle cone and chewed thoughtfully. He felt flattered that Tina had such faith in his dancing and that she wanted other people to see him dance. It made him feel warm and fuzzy. As for Rink and Chiki time, it was kinda unfair. How could he say no when she put it that way? He still felt bad for not spending as much time with her as before. He blamed sports for that. If he were to be honest, he missed her. “Weeeeeeell....” He popped the last bit cone into his mouth. “...Fine.” He was probably going to regret it, especially when the other jocks find out and slushie him.

Tina knew she’d been sort of unfair by pulling the Rink and Chiki card but it had apparently worked and so she couldn’t help but grin. “Awesome. It’s going to be fun, I promise” She took the last bite of her ice cream, chewing and swallowing, before smiling gently at Mike. “Hey, Rink...thanks,” she said barely above a whisper, she said the last word barely above a whisper.

“Hey, Chiki? It’s totally fine.” He replied, smiling at her. It really was okay. He didn’t mind, not a lot anyway.

“You’re the best. I’ve told you that before, right?” She smiled wider at him. He really was the best, her oldest and best friend.

“You might’ve mentioned it once. Or twice. I wouldn’t mind hearing it more though,” Mike replied with a teasing tone.

“You’re the best, you’re the best, you’re better than the rest. The bessst,” Tina replied in a sing-song voice.

He had to laugh at that. “Yeah! Don’t you forget about that!”

“Don’t worry, I won’t forget,” Tina tapped her head. “I’ve got a mind like a steel trap. That’s a ninja skill I picked up.”

“Yep. Like a ninja!” Ninjas were their thing and he loved it. “Since, I’m, you know, also a ninja with a steel trap mind, I remembered something. I wanted to ask if you wanted to spend New Year’s with us!” It was the first time he was asking and he hoped she’d say yes. New Year’s was fun.

“I would love to spend New Year’s with you guys!” Tina immediately grinned. “That would be awesome.” Anything she did with Mike was awesome and New Year’s wouldn’t be any different.

“Cool. I’ll tell my mom.” He grinned back at her. “This New Year’s would be so so so awesome.”

“Nah. It’s not going to be so so so awesome,” she tried to keep a straight face. “It’s going to be so so so so awesome.”

“Are we really going to do this?” He asked with a twinkle in his eyes. “Well, of course. Chiki, that is so wrong. It’s going to be so so so so so awesome.”

Tina laughed hard at that, she was having a hard time quitting laughing actually. It was probably all of the sugar from the ice cream. She tried to say it again with more so’s added on but she couldn’t do it without laughing. “You win,” she finally conceded.

“I knew I was going to,” Mike replied cheekily. He leaned back in his chair and stretched a little. “So, you ready to go?”

“Yep,” Tina agreed. Though, admittedly, she was never really ready to leave when she was spending time with Mike.

“Ok, cool.” Standing up, Mike pulled his phone from his pocket. It had been vibrating earlier but he chose to ignore it. He read through the texts before putting the device away. “So...looks like my mom won’t be here for another hour or so. Wanna look around?”

“Sure,” Tina nodded, getting up and pushing her chair back in it’s place. “Sounds like a plan to me.”
