Log: Sam and Mercedes

Who: Sam & Mercedes
When: January 2012
Where: Arcade in Lima Mall
What: Girls Game Too

Mercedes was so freaking excited, the arcade was getting some old school games in and she was more than ready to get her hands on the joysticks of Street Fighter so she could kick some ass with Chun Li. She was a regular here, and with her baseball cap on she blended in with the rest of the guys for the most part. It wasn’t quite as easy now because of her newly acquired ‘growths’. She didn’t blend in as much anymore, and no one with eyes would mistake her for a boy coming or going, but she was in an arcade, which made her not a hot girl, but a gamer girl.

She reloaded her token card and headed over to the skee ball games, she needed to warm her arm up before she went to the video games.

Sam was bored and needed to get out of the house. So, he walked to the mall and decided to use his allowance to head into the arcade. He missed the old one from his town in Tennessee. When he’d be home for long weekends from school and over the summer, he’d spend hours there. He nodded at a few of the other patrons and moved to some of the machines. He spotted the Street Fighter game and headed over there. He looked over at the girl playing. “Are you up for two players? I brought my tokens.” He said, holding up the card.

“Sure, but only if you promise not to cry when I beat you.” Mercedes replied without looking at who was speaking. Boys always thought they’d beat her, but it just didn’t happen. Well, it happened once, but the guy was some freaking Marines, Semper Fi, Leroy Jethro Gibbs type that kinda freaked her out a little. She turned her head slightly and then squinted her eyes in recognition. She knew this guy, he was in a few of her classes. She didn’t say anything though.

Turning to face her, he smirked and then his blue eyes widened. She went to his school. “Oh hey, you’re in some of my classes right?” He asked, holding out his hand. “I’m Sam...well you probably knew that. What’s your name again?”

She nodded her head, truly surprised he actually knew. She wasn’t exactly known for being memorable. “Yeah, hey Sam. I’m Mercedes.” She said as she shook his hand. “How is Lima treating you?”

Shrugging, Sam pushed the hair out of his eyes. “Honestly, I don’t know anyone except my folks really and I’m kind of sick of them. So, Lima so far is boring. Though,” he said, looking around. “This place is pretty awesome. Reminds me of home.”

“Well, now you know me and I have lived here my entire life, and yes you are very right, it’s boring here. This place,” she motioned with her hands as if she were one of those game show girls from The Price Is Right, “is by far one of the coolest places in town. Where are you from?”

“I’m from Tennessee. We moved here like three days before Christmas. That wasn’t all that fun.” It also meant, he didn’t get to see any of his relatives at Christmas either and that was his favorite part. It had been a pretty sad and boring day.

She frowned when she heard they moved so close to Christmas, that had to be so depressing! “I’m sorry you had to move so close to the holidays. Do you have any siblings?” It was their turn to play the game, and there were a few boys, about eight years old, that were hanging around to watch them. “I’ve got an older brother, he’s a senior.”

Sam nodded. “I have two. My little brother, Stevie, is ten and I have a little sister, Stacy, she’s about to turn four.” He walked up to the machine but let her go first. “Sometimes I wish I had an older bro. Must be way more awesome than being the oldest.”

“Not exactly. See, I bet you’re a cool older brother. Mine, not so much.” He was cool to everyone else though, he just wasn’t to her. She wasn’t ‘on his popularity level’ apparently. She picked her character and wrinkled her nose a little. “He did teach me the finer art of game playing though.”

“Yeah? Well, that’s pretty cool. I can’t wait to teach Stace how to game. She tries, but really all she does is mash buttons,” he joked as he selected Ken and then the arena. “Best two out of three?”

“That has got to be super cute though.” Something about a little kid playing a game seemed adorable. “Okay, game on.” She smiled brightly before she proceeded to play, not going all out with the moves because she wanted to see if this guy had any skills.

The first fight was pretty easy. He beat her with little effort. She played well, but he was just better obviously. He mashed at the buttons, moving the joy stick around as they started round two.

Oh no he didn’t. It was so on at that point, her small fingers doing damage as she did flawless combos, unleashing the spinning bird kick on his blond character. When she won the second round she just gave an innocent smirk as she caught a glimpse of him from her peripheral.

Sam blinked, staring back at the screen. She’d beat him. Like...she’d pulled moves on him he’d never seen anyone use before. Well, that was cool. He was definitely in it to win it. He looked over at her with a determined expression. “You’re so going down,” he promised.

“Don’t worry, there aren’t too many witnesses that will tell that you lost to a gii-iirl.” She sang. One of the little boys watching them chuckled, amused. And sure enough, although it was close, she won the third match. “Yatta.” She replied, mimicking the words and same pose as the character. This was the one place being this geeky was allowed. “Is that a tear I see?” She teased him.

Sam shook his head, but he was grinning. “That was amazing,” he said, looking over at her. He bowed to her greatness. He hadn’t been beat that badly in a long time.

She giggled, covering her mouth. “Dude, don’t start bowing, you’ll just feed my ego.” She moved so the younger kids could play.

“You totally deserve it. That was awesome,” he said with a shrug. “I lost so I owe you a shake or sundae. Whatever you want. Unless, you wanted to play a different game?” He looked around at a few of the games, wondering which ones she liked to play.

“Well, I picked this game, so the next one you get to pick.” She said with a smile. “And you don’t owe me anything silly. Gamers code of honor or something like that.”

Nodding, Sam led the way through a few games. “How do you feel about car games?” He asked, looking at her expectantly.

“I can play them at home, but I’m not the best here. Short legs and all.” She shrugged. “But I still might play good enough to smoke you.”

Sam flashed her a smile and took a seat. “Yeah, I don’t think so,” he eagerly selected his car, a yellow Ferrari...it was no Bug or Camaro, but it would do. His love of Transformers had started pretty early. Optimus was his favorite, but Bumblebee was definitely a close second.

Mercedes got in the booth next to his, snagging a sporty silver Solstice because it was the car Jazz turned into on earth. The fact she even remembered that made her so silly, but she couldn’t help it. “Okay, you ready?” She smirked at his car selection. “Nice choice, Italian Bumblebee.” She said under her breath.

Surprised, Sam looked over at her. “No way! You like Transformers? Awesome Jazz!” He complimented as she nodded. The game started and he furrowed his brow. She was cool and everything, but he was determined to beat her.
