Tuesday, February 22nd 2019 - Meeting Place on Market

After yesterday’s encounter, Rachel had been especially conscious in regards to timing her morning outing. Although it would mean a shorter break from home and the twins, it could also have the benefit of not running into Isobel again. Pushing the door of Meeting Place carefully open, she looked around, taking careful note of any distinct blonde heads of hair seated at the tables. When she ascertained there was no danger, Rachel took the last step into the eatery and headed toward the counter.

Sighing in relief after placing her order, Rachel took a seat at a table in the corner so she could face the door and the windows, hoping to spy any unwanted visitors that could perhaps head in her direction. Ten minutes into her book on twins and her tea still steaming beside her on the table, Rachel was suddenly alerted to a presence standing beside her at her elbow.

Isobel set the vegan zucchini cupcake on the table in front of Rachel. “Your favorite. It even has the almond milk cream cheese frosting on it.”

She pulled a chair from an adjacent table, flipped it around and sat down. The glare emanating from the woman just a few feet away could have blown up cities but she didn’t care. If Olivia and Benjamin were going to get to know her she’d have to let it just roll off her back.

Rachel narrowed her eyes and slowly lifted her head to stare at the blonde. “How do I know you haven’t laced it with something?” She asked, her tone snappy as she ignored the offering.

“Have I ever been able to bake?” Isobel snorted. “And I bought it here as you can plainly see from the embossed plate underneath it. Further more why would I want to injure the mother of my children?”

“Oh, I don’t know,” Rachel began sarcastically. “Perhaps for the same reason you slandered me all over the Internet and through the tabloids?” She pushed the plate away from her. There was no way she was going to accept anything Isobel had to offer her.

The blonde’s jaw dropped. “In what way did I slander you? I told them I missed you and wanted you to get better and come back to New York. All truthful statements. When someone we both trusted told me you were in rehab here, what was I to think?”

Rachel stared long and hard at Isobel. “And you believed whoever it was that apparently knew me better than you?” Rachel shook her head and closed her book, getting ready to leave. “You should have stayed in New York,” she said, pushing herself up and out of her seat.

“I saw you maybe an hour a week when you were doing West Side,” Isobel whispered. “You were so busy going to parties and rehearsals and I had no clue what to think. I loved you so much but you didn’t have time for me.”

Rachel narrowed her eyes and abruptly stood up from the table. “I don’t need to sit here and listen to this,” she said, quickly rounding the table and heading out the door without a backward glance at the blonde still left at the table.

Wednesday, February 23rd 2019 - Meijer Grocery Store

Isobel grabbed the last two containers of almond milk to place them in her cart. She crossed the item off her list and saw she just had a few more things to get to be finished. As she finally found the cereal aisle she heard some yelling behind her in the dairy department. What would be so important about something in a grocery store that you’d need to yell about? she wondered to herself.

Rachel ran her fingers through her hair as she glared at the shop assistant bending down to pick up the fallen cartons. Her shoes, socks and the hem of her jeans were soaked in cow’s milk and not only did this affect both her vegan views, it was also causing her hygienic irritation.

“I’m so sorry ma’am,” the shop assistant apologized for the fifth time as he picked up the spilt cartons, trying to stop the flow of milk across the floor. “The wheels on the trolley, they just stick sometimes,” he tried to explain, pointing a finger at the trolley. Rachel followed his finger and looked toward the base of the device. She could see the wheels were old and perhaps needed an upgrade.

Sighing, Rachel rubbed at her forehead. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to yell. I understand it wasn’t entirely your fault and accidents occur on a regular basis,” she said, lifting her right foot up and watching as milk dripped from her soles. She made a sound of disgust at the sight. “I really need to get home,” she murmured as she eyed the few contents of her carry basket. She couldn’t leave without Quinn and Abby’s preferred cereal choices, though.

Quickly making her way past a few aisles, she came to the breakfast aisle. Spying a familiar blonde head of hair at the end of the aisle, Rachel frowned and pursed her lips together. Her feet squelched as she marched her way toward Isobel. “Why do you insist on being everywhere I am?” She asked, her voice clearly giving away her displeasure.

Isobel rolled her eyes as she put a box of organic cereal in her cart, “First of all I’m just finishing up my shopping in the one good grocery store in town and...why do you have milk all over your feet?” She wrinkled up her nose at the sight. “Was that you yelling just a few minutes ago? Well, that would make sense. I wonder what would be so bad someone would need to flip out here of all places.”

Rachel narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms, hooking the handles of the basket into the crook of her arm. “You wouldn’t need to do any shopping if you weren’t in Lima and were back where you belong,” she replied, ignoring Isobel’s correct deduction of the yelling that had occurred a few aisles over.

"I'm exactly where I need to be - near to my children." Isobel half smiled. "Speaking of... I found this back in the City and had to get it."

She reached into her purse and fished out a small blue velvet box. She thrust her arm out to hand it to Rachel knowing that the other woman would see the metallic lettering on the lid that read 'Tiffany & Co'.

Isobel exhaled loudly as she watched the brunette's jaw drop slightly. "It's a charm bracelet with their names and birthstone on it. I remember you said you wanted one when we had a baby. Take it. Please?"

Rachel took a step back and shook her head. “No,” she said with determination. “No, they’re not your children. They’re mine. Mine and Quinn’s.” Rachel took a second, larger step back. She stared at the box in Isobel’s hand before glancing up to meet Isobel’s hazel eyes. She saw the blonde cock her head to the side and Rachel shook her head, not wanting to let herself fall for the same tricks. “You need to realize that you left me. For your career. That can keep you warm at night, not me and not my children,” Rachel said, her tone not as harsh as her words had been.

Rachel turned and shifted the basket now in her hand. The cereal could wait. She quickly walked away from Isabel and her outstretched hand, the squelching sound of her shoes and socks following her departure.

“You left, Rachel. I stayed. I did everything so we could have our children and you left.” Isobel said quietly. “They’re ours Rachel. Ours.”

Thursday, February 24th 2019 - Local Park

Rachel tilted her head back as she let the rare beam of sunlight warm her face. Santana had called earlier that morning and let her know she’d be a little late, so Rachel decided to try this “outing” thing on her own with the twins. She made sure they were well-dressed, beanies covering their small heads and mittens secured before venturing outside.

She’d decided to walk to the nearby park, just to save her the hassle of packing up the car. She packed pacifiers, blankets, diapers, two changes of clothing for each, and some water and snacks for herself. Breastfeeding had caused her appetite to grow over the last few weeks and a snack every two hours seemed to tie her over.

Rachel had found an empty park bench over-looking the playground. She braced her foot on the bottom of the stroller and used her leg to rock it back and forth, helping the twins to continue their nap. She closed her eyes, let her body relax into the bench and tilted her head back as she reveled in the warmth of the sun. She could feel the seasons changing and Rachel welcomed the sight of the blossoming flowers.

Isobel saw that the swingset was empty and quickly made her way over. She was surprised to see the sun shining after weeks of snow so she decided to take advantage of it. Following a quick breakfast at IHOP she walked to the park to try to think. Try being the operative word.

She put her uListen earbuds into her ears as she began to pump her legs back and forth. The warm sun combined with the soft wind felt good on her face after a long week.

Rachel continued rocking the stroller, letting her body sink into the bench as she leaned back slightly, just basking in the warmth surrounding her. She thought about how stressful her week had been, how Isobel seemed to be everywhere, but not today. No, today, she’d changed her routine, she’d left the house earlier, she’d even ventured on foot and she was so confident that Isobel wouldn’t track her down that she’d risked bringing the twins out with her. Today is going to be an excellent day, she thought to herself with a confident smile on her lips.

The blonde started to sing along with the music with her eyes closed, not caring who heard her. She needed to work on getting Rachel and their children back into her life and she hoped relaxing would help her think of better ideas. Singing wasn’t her forte as it was with Rachel so she rarely did it around their apartment, but she did use it as a way to get her to do what she wanted. Maybe that would work? Not likely, but she might have to use the information she had to work her way back into her lover’s life.

Rachel had her eyes closed and head tilted up to the sky. She heard Benjamin snort softly, but knew he hadn’t awoken. She could hear someone jogging along the path behind her, their dog panting by their side and in the near distance, a truly untrained, not completely terrible, but certainly not that beautiful a singing voice. Dropping her chin forward, Rachel slowly blinked her eyes open, only to find a familiar blonde swinging on the swing set. “Urgh,” she groaned.

As the score for West Side Story came on, Isobel grinned widely. Okay, she was going to give it her all and who cares who heard her? As she got to the crescendo she felt a set of eyes on her. She looked around the park to see someone sitting on the bench nearby glaring at her. Fuck If only there was a way for her to get out of this situation without looking like a total creeper she would. She exhaled loudly as she saw the brunette start to push the stroller over towards her with a frown on her face.

Rachel stopped a few paces from the bench and stared at Isobel, her fingers holding firmly to the handle of the stroller. No, Isobel wanted her to come running over. She wasn’t going to give in, not with something so important as her children’s future. Rachel shook her head slightly before she began to head back to the bench. All this running she’d been doing, it wasn’t healthy and she shouldn’t have to feel like she needed to hide in her own home town. If Isobel wanted to continue pursuing the matter, then Rachel would stop running and fight her on it. Sitting back on the bench, Rachel settled herself down, began rocking the stroller, took a book out from the carrier underneath the twins and began to read.

Isobel turned around and sat down on the swing as she grabbed her uTalk out of her back pocket. She pressed a number on her speed dial and began to talk. “It looks like she’s going to take the bait. I want all the information you have faxed to me at my house, understand? I’ll talk to you later.” With a smile, she pushed herself off the swingset to walk back to where her car was parked. Here we go Rachel. If this is what you want.

Rachel glanced up over the top of her book and watched Isobel’s retreating figure. Good, she thought to herself as Isobel left the park. Obviously standing up to Isobel was the way to handle this situation. Sighing in relief, Rachel could now concentrate on the printed words of her book.
