Look, it's review time! This episode saw the first appearance of the Ice Warriors, and it was pretty fun. Plot-wise, I enjoyed the warriors, and I found the evolution of the planet the writers imagined pretty fascinating. Artificial foods to sort the problem of world famine, thus plants limited to a minimum, thus drop of carbon dioxide and the Earth's temperature drops, instead of increasing like it's currently doing-the glaciers take over instead of melting away. Given that this is 1967, it's fascinating to see them come up with something that is basically the contrary of what's happening now, and yet fits humanity so perfectly. The computer and humans being so very dependent on its instructions were also fascinating. I loved the characters of Penley and Clent, Clent is the kind you want to smack, so hard-headed, but his whole world revolves around order and that doesn't mean he's inhumane, he just… needs to cling to what he can control. Of course Penley is the opposite of that-the scientist, the creative mind-and would loathe such a character. It's great to see how their personalities clash around the ending, but when push comes to shove, the choice does go to humanity, not the computer, and taking risks is the only way to survive-so Penley does that, and saves them all. (Plus Penley's actions and the Doctor's added up to defeat the Warriors-neat.) Their acknowledging each other then was a BRILLIANT moment-Clent going "You are the most insufferably irritating and infuriating person I've ever been privileged to work with" and then "Can't write a report though, can you? Something I've got to do for you. Well don't worry, it's something that I've been trained to do." Babies! Or rather human, wonderfully human men, different and flawed and stubborn and fearful and brave. I loved those two so much, really.
Besides that-the team TARDIS is still epic :D Jamie and Victoria are ten shades of adorable. The Doctor is perf. They are all hilarious. I died at the TARDIS landing sideways at the beginning, hahaha. Have I mentioned I love episodes that are not recons? It's bliss watching episodes that are not recons. I also love Two being clever and genius and perfect, and Jamie teasing Victoria about clothing/Victoria being cutely Victorian and disgusted with the clothing of the future ladies ;) Jamie was hilarious, being all wary of a guy and then suddenly all friendly and relaxed when he was told the man was a loyalist, and going "Oh, scientists aren't always right" about Penley who just stands there like "what?"-take that, Doctor, everybody needs a loyalist. ;) I loved Jamie and Victoria being alternatively endangered and Two's so visible concern and anxiety (plus their concern and fear for each other)-the moment when Victoria managed to contact the base, and Clent was pushing her for information and the Doctor was so gentle in contrast and standing by like ":( :( :( don't yell at my precious endangered companion" was just adorable. And once they were reunited there was MORE cuteness with the hugging/reassuring and pulling ridiculous tricks together-Victoria pretending to cry and the Doctor making nose-blowing noises to distract the Warriors and be able to tell her his plan… hilarious fail! XD Classic!Who has the cheapest escape tricks sometimes, but I love it.
Basically, all the team TARDIS feels all around. So far, Jamie and Victoria are definitely my favourite team for Two, like Ian, Barbara and Vicki/Susan were for One =)
Two is a genius. Two is hilarious. Two uses a complex chemical dispenser to get himself a glass of water. Two is casually pacific and will just walk into the Ice Warriors' lair with no weapon but his brain and a vial of chemicals. Two is crafty and can manipulate talk people into getting what he wants so neatly. Two is the most glorious thing invented since One.
I think that's all-next is The Enemy of the World, WHICH HAS BEEN FOUND AGAIN YESSSSS ♥ I've seen, like, two minutes of it but it looks delightful. ♥
Favourite lines:
[The TARDIS has landed sideways.]
Two: It was a blind landing."
Jamie: "Is that what you call it?"
Storr: "Archaeology. What good's that?"
Penley: "It's good to know things, even when they're dead."
Jamie: "Spacecraft! Hey, do you reckon that's where the warrior's gone back to?"
Two: "Well, he didn't come by Shetland Pony, Jamie."
Penley: "Clent doesn't need me. All he wants is a mirror. Preferably rose-tinted."
Penley: "I may be a physical coward, Penley, but you're a coward in the mind."
Penley: "This is a decision for a man to take, not a machine. The computer isn't designed to take risks, but that's the essence of man's progress."
