Classic!Who s3-The Daleks' Master Plan

Sep 22, 2013 22:06

Well, I finished Daleks' Master Plan eventually. Very grateful for that-12 parts, that's honestly too long, lol. I thought I would never see the end of it-especially since I watch less and less often when I'm doing proofreading work, which is kind of easier to carry on with during long periods. Anyway, thoughts as follows:

Plot-quite nice, though not a favourite. (I'm more partial to s2 so far.) I liked the ending most of all: it was visually quite beautiful, and so striking and dark. The effect on the Time Destructor on the Doctor and Sara unsettled me quite a bit, at first I was like "wtf" but Sara literally going to bone and dust was an incredible moment. The Time Destructor's effect on the Daleks made me giggle though. Crumbling Daleks, yay! But there was so much destruction, so much death and darkness in the closure of that ep. Katarina, Bret, Sara-all fleeting figures, briefly there, and then gone. Three deaths in a row =P

Daleks-I'm still not very fond of them, they bore me a bit and their voices make me wince =P But they do have hilarious moments, such as their reaction to finding a box full of mice for an experiment: "There are small white creatures inside. They may be hostile." Typical Dalek right there, guys. At some point when I was watching a recon, the narrative added bits called the Dalek Supreme "impassive". I chortled and wondered when a Dalek is not impassive. But mostly it was The Dalek History of Fail, Continued:
- the Doctor called one his "tin friend". ROFL.
- the Meddling Monk told them to shut up. No reaction.
- Chen acts fresh with them a couple of times and seems to occasionally wonder if they're stupid or just made of fail. He's occasionally right too.
- at some point one of them got shoved. Whoever it was got away with it.
- you can incapacitate a Dalek and make them screech like a baby by putting mud on their eyestalk. Why didn't they know that during the Time War?
- they totally obey the Doctor's terms when they're holding his friends hostage, just because he's got the taranium core. Plot reasons ftw.
Yeah… perfect recurring villain right there :D

Other characters close to the Daleks: I didn't care much about Chen at first, but he ended up seriously bugging me by the end. Megalomaniac fool. Also, one of the world's alien just kept sssstupidly hisssssssing in the most idiotic and useless way when he talked-I wish they hadn't done that, it was just painful ;)

(I realize I'm kind of bashing lots of things, lol. But I had a lot of fun really-it's cool, it's classic!Who, I'm just bringing up all the details that made be think "lol, what?" ;))

Part 7 felt very separate to the rest-I realized at the end that it was basically a Christmas special, which explains the utter randomness of the plot. Seemed like the characters had pretty much forgotten about the Daleks, and so had I. Hilarious silly policemen, hilarious accents, fun comedy. The travelers interrupting a movie cast was utterly predictable, but much fun to see.
Choice of hilarious lines:
- One calling himself "A citizen of the universe and a gentleman to boot." Feels. ♥
- One: "Do I take it that you gentlemen are imputing that I am mentally deranged?"
- Policeman to Steven: "Why don't you sit down, lad. You're making the place look untidy."
- the Doctor finding Arabian princesses to be a foreign concept: "Nonsense! You put some more clothes on, child. Go along."
- shortly afterwards, Sara suffers a similar problem: "I don't know, but a strange man kept telling me to take my clothes off."

And some more random in the following part: the TARDIS briefly appeared at the middle of a baseball game and the commentors were surprisingly fine with it. Cool Englishmen ftw.

Now for the companions-well, that was pretty much a transition episode companions-wise, a few characters were here but only Steven stuck around, here goes:

Katarina was sweet, very innocent, helpless and endearing, but that's not really my thing. Typical line from One to her: "Oh, don't ask questions, my dear girl, otherwise you'll become like the other two. Just do as you're told." Yeah, he likes them meek, doesn't he =P
However, her quiet faith in the Doctor and her priestess side were nice enough. I winced when she told him: "With you I know I'm safe." Also, those lines:
Katarina: Can we have reached the place of perfection so soon?
One: Ah, well, I rather doubt it. At least, that is, we shall be stopping at a lot of places before that!

Bret-honestly, having reached the end of the ep he didn't really stick to my memory, but his initially antagonistic dynamic with the Doctor was fun: "What's the matter with grandpa?"

Steven I didn't care so much about again. I have a feeling he needs a partner to be good, his dynamic with Vicki and the Doctor in his first ep was fun, then it was really much less memorable. They did exchange nice sarcasm with Sara but it wasn't outstanding either. I wonder how it'll be with Dodo… The one great thing was when he started getting plans and ideas of his own, science-wise, bickering about it with the Doctor, and his idea even worked! Now that was Steven being useful.

Sara was probably my favourite, I liked her ruthlessness at first, her utter devotion to her duty (to the point of killing a brother she thought to be a traitor-that felt a bit cliché though, and like it should have been treated with much more than a one-liner…). She distrusted the Doctor at first, then ended up believing in him and relying on him more than Steven. I liked her being more independent and badass than other female characters before-quite meaningful that the Doctor called her "young lady", she wasn't "my child" material. And at some point One offered her his arm and I swooned.

One had great moments, emotion-wise:
- his getting defensive to Bret about how he didn't want to kill anyone.
- his homage to Katarina after her death, with that quiet, soft voice: She didn't understand. She couldn't understand. She wanted to save our lives and perhaps the lives of all the other beings of the Solar System. I hope she's found her perfection. Oh, how I shall always remember her as one of the Daughters of the Gods. Yes, as one of the Daughters of the Gods.
- the ending, so dark and grim as I mentioned, with loss and destruction in the air…

And more fun One appreciation moments:
- Steven/Bret dialogue: "We got some valuable cargo on board." / "What, the taranium?" / "And the Doctor."
- One struggling against invisible creatures brought me all the Eleven parallels from the Vincent and the Doctor ep.
- he wore a Seven-ish hat again!
- love it when the Doctor's ring becomes plot-relevant, even in little ways.

Meddling Monk: I was looking forward to him a lot, liked him a bit less than his previous appearance though. The parts I'm ALWAYS loving are the Time Lord dialogues, those are just COOL. The play with the two TARDISes and One tricking the poor guy again were priceless as well. But when he got stuck between the Daleks and the Doctor, I thought he seemed way more awkward, overwhelmed and trying desperately to save his skin than sneaky and masterful. His double-faced act was a bit overdone and didn't fool Steven and Sara at all, and he ended up seeming a bit pitiful. I know we don't know anything about Time Lords yet, so he's not supposed to be that epic, but still =P

Okay, that's it I believe. Will watch the recons of the following eps next, slowly-I'm hoping that I'll enjoy Dodo's character. Also planning to catch s3 of Once upon a Time when it starts airing, so that might make things even slower, lol. I've never watched OUAT before, but a great friend of mine made me fall in love with Rumbelle already. I read up a bit on the past seasons, and I guess I'll give this a try! Quite curious about Regina too…
