Somewhere in the back of your mind, you know that there is a definite link between the development and increase in canvas size to the length of your relationship with him. They matured with each other. Like siblings that loved each other, that fought every day. Just because there was anger, that didn’t mean they weren’t always there for each other.
It's really amazing how this one little fic explains so well, with a simple metaphor, an important truth about Brian and Justin's relationship, one of the aspects that defines the beauty of it, and my reason for thinking the way the series ended is not quite as nightmarishly horrible as so many fans think it is. By describing how the development of their relationship coincides with Justin's development as an artist, and the increasing sizes of the canvases he paints on, the author shows that Brian enabling Justin to grow as a person on his own, have his own identity besides just the identity of Brian's husband, actually strengthens rather than weakens their relationship. He lets go of him just enough to be able to keep him, and realizes during the moment described in this fic that Justin still always will come back to him. Is that not a stronger relationship than that of a married couple with locks on their doors? Now really. (*Braces self for flames*).
