this writer's meme thing

Since everyone and their mother is doing this meme that pluvial_poetry started, I thought I might as well, too. I think everybody should who has done enough fic writing to, especially those in QaF fandom since I'm new to it and still kind of need to be directed to what to read. :)

Post a list of your top five favorite fics you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most.

1. "Asphodel" (Harry Potter)

This is just about the angstiest thing I've ever written, but I'm convinced there's so much going on in Snape's head we don't see that you can't do him justice without having a little angst. This is the first thing I ever wrote in second person narrative, and once I got into his head everything just seemed to naturally come out like I knew him better than I ever realized. It's a rather dark and intense place to go; he has so much remorse and digust and hatred for himself. But what fun.

2. "Requiems" (Harry Potter)

It was hard deciding between this and "Preludes," its prequel, since I now basically think of both of these as two parts of a series, but "Preludes" was done about five years ago and is very badly written, now that I go back and read it over. "Requiems" has definite weaknesses as well, but I just have a special place in my heart for it since it's been a work in progress I've been devoted to for about three years (yeah, seriously) and am finally about to have finished. No matter what we find out about the Marauders and Lily in the last book that might make my characterizations of them inaccurate, I will still have an attachment to my Sirius, my Lily, and my James, since I have been spending time with them for so long.

3. "Home" (Brokeback Mountain)

BBM is an extremely depressing movie, and I think the subject I wrote about in this ficlet is more relevant to what makes Jack and Ennis's lives so tragic than most of the other things I wrote for this fandom and therefore, in my point of view, is one of the saddest ones I did. Although it talks about Jack and Ennis's relationship, it's essentially about Ennis and his mother, and is very much inspired by the scene when Ennis hums the song to Jack that he says his mother used to sing to him. Ennis was orphaned when very young and left to take care of himself, and basically forced to grow up very quickly, so in this fic I tried to convey that feeling of nostalgia I think everyone can identify with that you have when you look back on the time of innocence and carelessness that childhood was, and compare that feeling of safety and happiness with what Ennis had when he was with Jack on the mountain. But this is something they were never able to truly have more than once, as they never went back to the mountain (or "returned to Eden"). Strangely, lots of people actually found the mood of this fic to be bittersweet and thought the last paragraph describing them being always unified like the shirts hanging together in the closet had a sense of hope. I thought that was only sad, as it says for most of their lives they were in peace together only in memory and in their hearts.

4. "Red and White" (Brokeback Mountain)

Like "Home," I think this taps into an aspect of the movie's story everyone can identify with, which is just regret for something you never did or had that just grows to be worse as you get older. I was very surprised that I got such a positive reaction to this, since I didn't think many people would be interested in reading something that attempted to humanize Lureen and shed some light on where she's coming from, plus portray her and Jack's relationship as something not completely lacking in love, even if it is not a healthy marriage at all.

5. "Precious" (Queer as Folk)

I think I had so much fun with this because I was doing a lot of things in it that I'd never even tried before. It's the longest thing I've ever written in present tense, which took getting used to. I've generally never written characters who are anything like the guys of QaF before, so it was very interesting and fresh to write conversations in the way they talk. Also, I just plain ignored a bunch of rules of writing, such as using second person for statements like "You try to make something good out of something bad," or "it was like something you are so unaccustomed to saying that it comes out sounding like a lie." And usually I write tons of very long, descriptive sentences, but with this story the style was more choppy and fragmented, and had a bunch of incomplete sentences kind of like thoughts. I guess it worked okay. I liked experimenting with stuff like this, anyway.
