Fan Fiction Rec: "How To Be Dead" (Queer As Folk)

"Most parents love their kids unconditionally, and that’s great," says Vic, "and kids get two people who love them unconditionally, and they’re lucky, and they deserve it, and it’s great. And you didn’t get that, and that sucks, but you know what, Brian? Parents love their kids because they have to, it’s just biology. But you know what you did? You went out and made people love you unconditionally, and not even because they have to. Just because of who you are. And you didn’t even do it by being nice. You’re a fucking asshole, you’re a cunt, and I can still think of four people who love you anyway, and will love you no matter what you do. You need to stop feeling sorry for yourself and start giving something back."

This fic is one of those rare "Holy shit I can't believe how good this is" finds. And this definitely won't be the only story by this author I will recommend. I like her writing because she doesn't try to be flowery and poetic and make up for a lack of meaningful content with "eye candy" imagery; instead, she just uses very simple language to describe very large and complex ideas, sometimes managing to sum up an entire thematic element in the series in one sentence that hits you right in the gut.
