Bailey is one writer in the BBM fandom who has produced quite a large amount of quality fanfic that I've really enjoyed. Her writing has a unique kind of dark beauty in it. Her alternate-universe fic "Line Squall" was easily the most fucked-up BBM story I've read, about Ennis and Jack killing some guys in both self-defense and revenge and going on the run from the law, which is probably the only fanfic I've ever found rated NC-17 for violence as much as for sex scenes. Yet, extraordinarily, it was not at all without heart. Even when this writer's stories are focused on sex they're always about love, if only in a hushed and restrained way.
This one of hers I'm recommending is a filler-scene fic, which she is very good at writing. She can take any scene just hinted-at or implied in the film or short story and bloom it into a developed vignette. This one is about Jack and Ennis's very last night together, the title obviously coming from what Jack says at the end of the joint-smoking scene since the story pretty much follows everything that might have happened after that line was said. I love how it takes just as much from Proulx's story as it does from the movie, because I love that scene of their last time together in the story.
