Fan Fiction Recommendation: "Modern City" (Harry Potter)

Nov 24, 2005 21:26

They are no one here in the city, and Ted wraps himself and his wife in woolly anonymity and loves that the smile the grocer gives him is the same he gives everyone else. Andromeda touches her hair as they leave and says nothing. The streets are broad here, and there is room enough for her to twine her arm through Ted’s and lean into his shoulder, room enough that no one will look at them askance. Here the streets are smooth and flat and follow the horizon as they run. No diagons, no knocks, no turns.

A really wonderful little piece about Andromeda Black and Ted Tonks before they had Nymphadora. They are a very interesting couple, I think, because we don't know anything about them except that Ted is a Muggle-born and apparently a slob, and Andromeda is apparently pretty cool because she was Sirius's favorite cousin, and it was a big rebellion against her family when they got married. It's fun to guess which one Tonks got each of her traits from and build their characters from there.

This story is good in the way it is an anti-fairy-tale love story. At first it would seem Ted has married the princess and rescued her from the castle she was trapped in. They live a peaceful life in a Muggle city where nobody has any idea of the war that's going on in the wizarding world. But no matter how much Andromeda loves to run away from the troubles she would find at home, this place isn't home.
