“You have to act like you’re not in love.”
Junmyeon didn’t dare to lift his face up.
His gaze was fixed to his hands on his lap, unable to look at anywhere else. Junmyeon found himself breaking into a small smile when he felt another hand was placed on his knee, but it soon faltered the moment Yifan spoke.
“Hyung, whatever it is that you’re calling us for, Junmyeon’s not at fault.”
Junmyeon swallowed thickly. No,don’t say that, it’s definitely my fault, too...
“Damn right he’s not,” their manager retorted coldly and gave Yifan a judging look. “It’s your fault, Kris.”
Junmyeon gritted his teeth as he looked away. He wanted to say something, but it was as if the words were stuck in his throat. The male had a feeling he knew what was coming, and he also knew that he wasn’t going to like it. Junmyeon almost broke into tears for feeling so scared and yet irritated at the same time. He managed to bite back a sob when Yifan quickly grabbed his hand, as if the latter knew what he was thinking.
“It’s my fault,” Yifan replied coolly. “Okay. But can you please be more specific about it, Hyung?”
“Don’t play dumb, Kris. This has happened for a few times already. I told you to keep it to yourself, didn’t I? It was just a simple thing to do, but why is it so hard? Your fans-those fangirls and fanboys, they wanted to see EXO as a group. And you just have to ruin it. We’ve been waiting for this for so long, Kris. You guys finally have the chance to have your own TV show.”
Junmyeon shut his eyes.
“You can just speak straight to the core, Hyung. I’m getting confused.”
“Stop fooling around!! This is about your relationship!!” Their manager slammed his fist against the table, and Junmyeon flinched beside Yifan.
“Fooling around?” Yifan’s tone was calm, but it was laced with obvious anger. “So you’re saying that I’m just playing-“
“I just asked you to be subtle, Kris, that was all! But why is it so hard for you to oblige? This group isn’t just about you and your boyfriend. This group doesn’t consist of two persons only. Those times at the airports-“
“Those times,” Yifan interrupted calmly. “Are the only moments where I get to live as myself, not as an idol. You told us to stop acting on stage, fine. We’re off the stage, and I get to do whatever I like. That was the deal. I can show everyone that I’m dating Junmyeon, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
“There are cameras everywhere-“
“Do you honestly think I care about that??” Yifan snapped, his patience was getting thin. Junmyeon instinctively grasped Yifan’s arm at that, wanting to calm him down. “It’s not my problem if cameras are everywhere. Do you think I like being followed around? Getting my pictures taken just like that? They were being so close, so intimidatingly close. Junmyeon wasn’t comfortable, and I just had to protect him. He’s my boyfriend, dammit.”
Their manager’s expression darkened. “Did you think it was just the airport moments?? What about that time when you grabbed Suho’s hand on stage-“
“For God’s sake, it was only for a few seconds!!” Yifan angrily stood up and Junmyeon cried in fear. “Anyone can hold hands with whoever they want for a few seconds and nothing will be judged because of that!”
“Yifan, stop-”
“You stay out of this, Junmyeon.”
“Yes, you stay out of this, Suho. This is between me and Kris.”
“Yifan, please-“
“No, I will not stop until he knows that he’s wrong-“
“Yifan, please...” Junmyeon helplessly pressed his forehead against Yifan’s shoulder. “Please, don’t shout...please...” Yifan clicked his tongue disapprovingly at Junmyeon’s soft plea, but he stayed quiet after that. It was a wonder how Junmyeon always managed to calm him down. Junmyeon took a deep breath and he tiredly stared at their manager. “Just...just tell us what you want.”
“You’re lucky you have a wise boyfriend, Kris,” their manager said sharply and Yifan felt like throwing something at his head. “I think it’s obvious of what I want. I want you to stop flirting with each other, especially onstage. No more holding hands, no more touching, no more gazing at each other-“
“That’s impossible!” Yifan grunted in disbelief. “If we do that, the fans will think we hate each other-“
“That would be even better. You two looked like you didn’t get along in Mama era and I think that’s a whole lot better. I don’t want-the company doesn’t want anyone to sniff out your relationship. You both have signed the contract, and that means you’re gonna do whatever we say you do. And you, Kris, you need to spend more time with the other members. The fans really like it. Especially with Zitao. Or Baekhyun.”
Junmyeon turned pale. “No, please not that...”
“I’m sorry, Suho, but orders are orders. I’ve spoken to the other managers about this and they all agreed. You guys really need to be separated for the sake of the group.”
Junmyeon stifled a sob underneath his palm and tugged Yifan’s sleeve, as a sign that he wanted to leave the room. Yifan opened his mouth to sound his protest, heck, what was it about separating them for the sake of the group? Whose sake?? But his heart broke upon hearing Junmyeon sniffling and he sighed heavily in defeat.
Yifan slammed the door as hard as he could the minute they stepped out. He then placed a hand on Junmyeon’s hair, caressing it lightly. The two of them silently walked toward their dorm, but halfway there, Yifan pulled Junmyeon into the nearest practice room. Fortunately it was unoccupied. Yifan took the chance to embrace his lithe boyfriend, and his heart ached at the way Junmyeon sobbing against his chest. The Chinese male felt like punching a wall. He hated it whenever Junmyeon cried...
“You should’ve just let me argued with him,” Yifan started.
Junmyeon weakly shook his head. “I don’t want to lose you...”
“Don’t be silly, you won’t.”
“The last time I let you argued with the manager, you went back to Canada for weeks...” Junmyeon sniffed. “I don’t want to go through it anymore...it was so painful...”
Yifan sighed apologetically. “Sorry. I was being selfish that time. I left you alone...”
Neither of them said anything after that. Yifan continued to stroke Junmyeon’s hair, until both of them were tired from standing, and slid down to sit on the floor. Yifan gazed at the large mirror across them. Even though they were both guys, he couldn’t help but think that they were meant to be. The way Junmyeon leaned to him was casual, but Yifan needed it. The other members were always saying that Junmyeon was the one who needed Yifan, but truthfully, it was the other way around. Damn it, he needed Junmyeon more than anything.
It wasn’t easy being in a big group with twelve members, but Junmyeon made him comfortable. He got along with the other members just fine, but Junmyeon...the fair-skinned male was special. Yifan just couldn’t control it-his line of sight would drift to Junmyeon every few seconds whenever they were together, and it was automatic. The feeling of wanting to touch Junmyeon, to brush his fingers against Junmyeon, to smile at him, to laugh with him, it was just there. It was natural, it was not forced, like it was the right thing to do.
Yifan realized that making Junmyeon happy was the purpose of his life, and if he couldn’t spend twenty-four hours to do it, he just needed a few hours. No, just a few minutes was enough. Heck, even a few seconds was all right. As long as he got to see Junmyeon smiling at him, it would make his day.
How was he supposed to keep it to himself, when all he ever wanted was the whole world to know that he was happy with Junmyeon...?
Why was it so hard for them to be together...?
Was it because of they were leaders...?
If only Yifan wasn’t a leader. Or if only Junmyeon wasn’t one. Then maybe, just maybe, they wouldn’t have to suffer like this. Who knew that they were going to comeback as a whole group? It might have been better if they stayed separate as two groups... But then again, every time Yifan remembered how miserable he was whenever he longed for Junmyeon when they were miles apart, he changed his mind.
He wanted them to stay like this.
Forever.
“You know,” Junmyeon said softly after a long moment as he laced his pinky finger with Yifan’s. “At times like these, I really envy Baekhyun...”
Yifan frowned. “Why is that?”
“Because Baekhyun...” Junmyeon sighed, shrugging in uncertainty. “He can really handle these things well. And Chanyeol, too...”
Yifan hummed. Junmyeon had a point. Baekhyun and Chanyeol could really act like they weren’t together.
“But I can’t... I’m jealous, Yifan...”
“And you think I’m not?” Yifan nudged Junmyeon’s stomach softly. “I’m extremely jealous at everyone who approaches you. Even worse, those who stare at you. And I can’t handle it well, too. Just look at how many times I stared at you. And touched you, if you want to add that.”
Junmyeon chuckled. “What did Chanyeol say about us? Eyefu-”
“Yeah, don’t say that word,” Yifan rolled his eyes. “Really, that boy.”
Junmyeon giggled. He took another deep breath before saying, “If it’s Baekhyun, I’m okay...”
“Hm?”
“I...I think I will be okay, because Baekhyun has Chanyeol...right? And...as for me, who are you okay with? Is Jongdae all right?”
“Ugh, to be honest, I feel like peeling Jongdae off of you,” Yifan face-palmed in irritation. “But...but yeah. Jongdae is okay. Jongin and Kyungsoo are also okay. I don’t know, whoever it is, as long as they don’t go overboard... Junmyeon, just promise me one thing.”
Junmyeon tilted his head to a side. “Anything.”
“Glance at me every few minutes?” Yifan said sheepishly. “Just for a couple of seconds. It’ll make me calm.”
“Okay,” Junmyeon sincerely smiled. Yifan smiled back and lifted up his hand to wipe Junmyeon’s dried tears on the latter’s cheeks. Junmyeon fluttered his eyes close and sighed in content. “We should go back. Everyone must be worried by now...”
Yifan was the first one to stand up and offered his hand to Junmyeon. Junmyeon willingly accepted the proffered hand. They were about to exit the room when all of a sudden, Yifan wrapped an arm around Junmyeon’s waist from behind, eliciting a small gasp from the latter.
“You know,” Yifan said quietly on Junmyeon’s ear. “You’re definitely wrong if you think I’m gonna oblige to what they said. Screw their opinions. It’s my live-it’s our lives. I love you, and it’s all that matters. I live for you, Junmyeon.”
Junmyeon’s eyes were sparkling as he looked at Yifan, and dear god, Yifan had never seen such a beautiful person like him before. No one had managed to take his breath away with just a simple glance. If Junmyeon ever left, Yifan’s world would crumble to pieces, and he would definitely become weak.
Junmyeon was the sun in his universe.
The shorter male tiptoed slightly to press a chaste kiss on Yifan’s lips.
“I love you more, Yifan...”
Yifan felt like he had gained his strength back at those words. The Chinese male gently returned the kiss, loving the view of Junmyeon closing his eyes as a reaction, and he was determined.
He would fight for Junmyeon.
End.
