Watchmen miscellany

The Watchmen movie site redesign is great. Loving mostly every actor's voice as their character. I feel like the only one not sure about Ackerman as Laurel most days, though. I'll have to see the movie to be certain about it, of course, but her performance leaves me disappointed somehow, whether it's in the voice clips or what we've seen of her in ( Read more... )

I'm hoping that maybe it's the scenes selected or something, because I'd hate to see someone playing an important role give a lackluster performance compared to the others in the film. For some reason, Ackerman's take on Silk Spectre II doesn't get as much discussion as the other actors, so I was starting to think it was just me.

i think Ackerman makes a good comedian (and not in the watchmen sense).

I know! I think she's done a few comic roles (The Heartbreak Kid, Harold and Kumar) but I'm judging from her her reactions to Bob Stencil, here:

However, I do like what I've seen of her in the role of Laurie so far. We'll have to wait for opening day to be sure, but I do think that Snyder got his casting bang-on for this film.

That said, I heard someone (roach_patrol?) say that she heard Jennifer Carpenter's voice whenever she read Laurie's lines in the comic. I can see it.

Yeah, Malin Ackerman seems like the weak link the cast now (the audio clips on the new website have gotten rid of my lingering doubts about Matthew Goode) which might not mean that she's bad exactly, just not on the same level as guaranteed scene-stealers like JEH and Morgan. She seems really nice in interviews but I hope this casting wasn't a case of "let's get a random hot actress who poses in her underwear for Maxim for the girl role".

I'm really hoping that's not why she was cast, but I'm getting a little worried. It's not like she's a background character whose performance can be ignored. :/

The clips reassured me on how well Ozymandias will be played, too.

I have no opinion one way or the other about Ackerman but that could be because I really don't care much for Laurie. Sadly we're not being given much to judge her by, three quarters of the scenes are just her looking sexy in her costume.

I did however spend a good ten minutes seriously fangirling over Ozymandias' section. I'm deadly afraid I'm going to squeak out loud in the theater the first time I see him and embarrass myself horribly.

Perhaps you could detail another mission for the Night Owl/Comedian fic. That can't have been the only one they went on.

That's true. Some of the voice clips on the site are delivered a little poorly, so it made me worry a bit more than I had previously about it. She isn't my favorite character, but I hope this won't be a case of one actor detracting from the overall film, especially since she's the main female character.

I was pretty impressed by Ozymandias as well. Heh, I'm pretty sure people are going to get pissed in the theater at how I'm fangirling over everything.

That's probably a good way to go about it. I don't want it to seem like a 'random excuse for a pairing' fic.

I could barely hear the Comedian. In fact, I didn't think it was him at first. I think once we see more of Ackerman we're going to feel a little better. After all, everyone was worried about Matthew Goode bringing the movie down and the more you see of him the better he looks.

None of us would care if you just did a 'random excuse for a pairing' fic, honest.

On the Watchmen movie board, someone posted a rip of the different audio from the site (here is a new link to it) so you should be able to hear the actors better. You're probably right. Ha ha, I need to not angst over it when it will probably be okay.

Ha ha, thanks. I just don't want to be one of those folks ranted about for unbelievable scenarios/pairings, I guess.

I'm having a lot of trouble with Akerman, too. I'm trying not to have the "NOOOO! Doesn't match the voices in my head!" reaction because ... well, actor interpretation is what it is. And just because, say, Billy Crudup doesn't sound like Dr. Manhattan in my head doesn't mean he's going to be bad. But ... I don't know. Akerman is just such a 180 from how I envision Laurie. I have this image of this angry and brash woman in my head and Akerman is just so ... demure ... in most of her scenes. It's just so bizarre.

I mean, Laurie's maybe my second favorite character after Rorschach and God knows I don't WANT her to do badly, but the little I've seen of her does make me nervous.

(Also, I'm another one who didn't like Matthew Goode until that clip. Before I was very "Bah, you and your silly quasi-Nazi origin" but now I'm like, "Ahhhhh ... helloooooooo!")

I love your bad aunt story. I'm sometimes bad-older cousin. I once drew my five-year-old cousin a picture of a giant, sharp-toothed frog chowing down on a sheep. (She loved it.)

I had a similar view of Laurie, which is why everything we've seen & heard is making me a little nervous as well. I don't want this to be a case where the movie version of a character is vastly different from how the person was portrayed in the original work. :

Ha ha, kids can be funny sometimes. You think they'd be scared of something, but it's the opposite.
