[ MATTHEW IS IN FACT NOT AT THE DANCE, but is in the common room staring at Quidditch tactics and half baked ideas for that school project stroking his beard.
[ ...there's a pot joke to be made somewhere, but Katya doesn't know any. :(
INSTEAD, she comes downstairs after issuing her STERN AND SERIOUS WARNING TO THE STUDENT BODY, to start working on Christmas presents. that's right, instead of an upper body, she is an armful of multicolored yarn balls piled high and about a dozen knitting needles poking out. as such, she doesn't actually see Matthew until she puts everything down in an overstuffed armchair by the fireplace. ]
[ Hey, Matthew hasn't even touched weed (yet), not a single ounce!! In any case, Matt glances up at her in surprise. The hand that had cradled his chin in academic wonder immediately flails outwardly in some sort of awkward gesture, his spine straightens from its morose slouch.]
Eh? Oh! No, certainly not, Katyu-- [ No, no, not yet. ] Katya. I'm just.... thinking. Sorry, um.
[ Good evening, it's not as if I've been avoiding you this entire week or anything. ]
I wasn't expecting any company, please excuse this mess.
[ THAT'S RIGHT STRAIGHTEN UP you'll ruin your posture if you don't sit properly!!!!! ... is what she would say if they hadn't been Super Awkward all week. ]
Well... [ sheepishly Katya shrugs, a gesture at her own disorganized pile of yarn. ] Neither was I, really. I thought everyone would be at the dance, so I could get some work done.
[ why is she talking like he didn't clearly have the same thought, WELL because silence is clearly more awkward than rambling. right? right. ]
I-I was thinking to do the same, actually, with the game coming up and the fair. You know.
[ YEAH, time to break eye contact and reshuffle that hideous pile of ink covered paperwork. ]
May I ask why you opted out of the dance? I would have thought you would have liked to go... [ A sudden, welcome thought, and he wonders if there was much dancing at the wedding, wonders if he managed not to step on her toes. He hunches down again, the back of his ears flushing red. ] I-I'm not much of a dancer myself. Spared everyone the embarrassment of watching me make an attempt, really.
[ Because self-depreciating jokes are always better than awkward silence. ]
[ when Matthew looks away, Katya does too, shifting in her seat to tighten her dressing gown and pick up the nearest ball of yarn to start a row. LA LA, nothing is wrong here. ]
It's the same, no ideas for the fair yet, and I wanted to start early on holiday gifts. And I get so nervous in nice clothes, I don't think I'd be able to enjoy myself! [ 'and no one asked, besides,' which, while true, isn't important enough for her to want to mention - what with things between them still so precarious. still, she half-nearly remembers, 'you were such a quick learner, though.' - which is another thing she doesn't dare mention.
CHANGE THE SUBJECT, THEN. ]
I wish I could help you, though. I'm just so rubbish at Quiddich... You'll do really well though, I know it.
Oh, but you've always looked very nice in fancy dress! [ UH. ] I-if you don't mind me saying, from what I've seen... so far...
[ Katya mentions Quidditch ( Lili was a fantastic Quidditch player-- ), and suddenly he finds himself questioning whether his ex-girlfirend already has a date to the dance or not. The mere thought ( she probably does ) twists at his heart, and Matthew swallows, hard. With one pathetic roll of his shoulder, Matthew scratches at his beard and slumps over, elbows on the tops of his knees. ] .... yeah.
[ A pregnant pause follows despite himself, but Matt attempts to make a quick recovery and eases into a small slanted smile. ]
Though if you wouldn't mind, I-I suppose we could help each other brainstorm for fair ideas? I'm afraid knitting and the like are more of my father's forte.
No, that's a great idea! I already had a plan for, for this anyway.
[ and she charms a couple pairs of needles into starting a row before crossing over to where Matthew sits. reflexively, like she's done it a thousand times (she has), she reaches over to rest her hand on his shoulders, reassuring. (you'll get this exam/homework/charm/potion perfectly!) ]
I have to admit I really haven't had time to think even think yet. Nice flower arrangements won't do me any good here, I think.
That's behaving, right? ]
