I got home a few hours ago from nationals for water polo. We got to go this year because even thouh we lost to Oregon again, they were hosting and so the runner-up from the Northwest league also got to go, but we went in ranked 16th. We played UC Davis Fri. morning and lost, but had a good 1st quarter at least ending it only down 3-2 (it was tied til the last second) but ended up losing 15-6. And one of the girls yanked on my cap strings hard enough to break one of the rings, so it no longer stays on unless I tie it in a knot. Fantastic. Fri. evening we played Notre Dame, which we came out not really ready for. They were leaving to counter anytime it looked like we were going to shoot (smart on their part as their goalie was really good) and I was getting back with them, but no one else was. Our coach called a timeout when we were already down 4-0 only a few min into the game and we got our act together a bit. We managed to only lose 15-8. Since we lost our Fri. night game, we wouldn't play Sunday, and today played Lindenwood. Oregon played Lindenwood the first day and stomped them so we figured we would win fairly easily.
We didn't score as much as we should have, but they were playing very dirty and we were getting caught up in it. Also their goalie was decent, if psycho. The girl I guarded in set for the first few min of the game we crazy and grabby and swimming straight into me splashing me to get me to back off of her, but I would just show the grab or put my hands up and move back a bit til she stopped splashing. She pulled on my finger so hard at one point I thought it would be dislocated any moment, but luckily I got it free. It still hurts a lot, and so I'm trying to be short. Later I was hit in the eye (like actual finger to eyeball, along with the general eye socket area), which makes it hurt to close my eye with any force. That one was a legit accident though, the girl was just swimming and I turned around and my face got in the way. Their goalie was ejected from the game along with one of our players after some scuffle at the far end that I missed most of, which ended with (according to our player) the goalie saying "you're gonna die bitch". They then accused us of biting, which I can't imagine anyone on our team doing, but at the same time, would you bite your own teammate or yourself to try to get the other team in trouble? We ended up letting them score 3 goals in the final half of the 4th quarter, but still won 8-3, so it was ok. Several of their players refused to say "good game" as we walked down the line at the end of the game, and at least one tried to not shake my hand. I just grabbed their forearm if they wouldn't put out their hand, leaned over and very loudly with emphasis, said, "good game" even though I didn't really mean it. I don't care how much I hate a team at the end of a game for being grabby or cocky or anything, I still shake their hands and go through the motions, it's just really poor sportsmanship not to. They also seemed to make a deliberate effort to not be in the locker room until we were out, though there were still about 6 of us in there finishing drying our hair or putting on make up or whatever when they came in. They stood around talking about how dirty of players we were and how playing dirty is just the sign of a weak and pathetic team.
In the end I guess I can only speak for myself though I'd like to think that the players on my team would play the same when we scrimmage as against another team and therefore I could vouch that none of them would be excessively grabby, kicky, or ever bite anyone, but who knows. I know that I went into that game expecting it to be easy and therefore planning on playing even nicer than usual and not getting into any pettiness. I generally go easy on a team that I think we will be able to beat easily, on the assumption that it's not necessary to rub it in at all. The set issues right at the beginning put that idea out of my head, but I still only held people twice that I remember, both times for a split second to give my goalie time to get the ball safely to the side of the cage and far enough away to make chasing not an option (I do this regularly, I am very protective of our goalie). I generally prefer to just get in front of someone and park myself in their way so that they would have to swim over me to get to the ball. I never deliberately kicked anyone on the other team, though I was kicked in the stomach at least 5 times, along with the other injuries. Amazingly, I was only ejected once today (I was ejected twice from each of our games yesterday). There was someone at the table videotaping most of the games yesterday but today I'm not sure anyone was at the camera, so I guess we might never be able to see what really happened. They probably figured that the games for the last 4 places would not need to be videotaped.
Other than that, I think I got decent yield for my rxn Friday, but I need to try to re-purify some of the product that came off the column with other impurities to see if I can't get a little more clean, pure product. If I can get enough to reasonably try the next rxn, I will be estatic, but still a little dissapointed that I seem to be getting about 1/3 of the yield I get when I use the unlabeled starting material as opposed to the stuff I am labeling. Oh well. And tomorrow I am going to try really hard to work on the sections of my general paper on the work I have done (should be easy since I can probably grab most of it from my papers, but who knows) and maybe look some stuff up on Protein G so I can add into that part of my talk and try to give a practice talk on Tuesday before I turn in the form to set my exam date in stone.
But, now I think my laundry is almost done and it is time for me to go to bed. Water polo gives me a huge headache for whatever reason, and just rehydrating doesn't seem to get rid of it. I also let my coach know today that I'm not sure I'll play next year, but I guess I could change my mind by the time Fall comes around.
