CHARACTER INFORMATION-
Canon Character and Series: Rangiku Matsumoto, Bleach
Age: 27
Gender: female
Position & Ship: The Victoria II, Boatswain, with the rank of Lieutenant Commander
Appearance: Rangiku is a tallish woman, standing at 5'8. She might have a leaner look if it wasn't for the fact that she is very, very heavy chested. Her shoulders are broad, but her thin arms and ribcage give her a slightly less bulky look than she might otherwise have. She has long, sturdy legs. Her medium-thick strawberry-blond hair is slightly wavy and falls down her back in layers. Her eyes are an icy, flat gray-blue edged with a darker circle of slate gray. She has a beauty mark below the right corner of her mouth. She has the appearance of a mature and charming woman, so charming and coquettish you might not notice how tall and broad shouldered she is, how strong her hands are or the way she squares herself and stands like a man the moment she becomes serious, letting her expression drop into one far blunter and less delicate.
In her dress, Rangiku generally favors pastel colors, pink, purple, yellow and light blue, though she will also wear dark charcoals and burgundies in the fall and winter. She likes to wear tight tops to show how slender her waist is. She likes to wear simple necklaces in the shape of a chain with a large ring on the end, which the end is then dropped through to form a Y shaped necklace. She likes flowing scarves, and things that look feminine, but she also shies away from lace or frills. A fur trim would be more her style. She will sometimes wear more covering styles, things with an empire waist or flowing sleeves, but they make her look a little heavier because of her curves. And Rangiku would be the first to tell you there is no fat on her ribs!
Personality: On first blush, Rangiku appears to be a very friendly, very extroverted, very sociable person. She appears easy-going, somewhat lazy, undisciplined and disorganized, but upbeat and bubbly. She has more than the ordinary taste for alcohol (especially sake) and seems to take pride in how much work she is able to avoid. She can come across as being overly-confident, obstinate and self-aggrandizing, sometimes rude or overly-familiar in a flippant, girlish way, quieting down and pulling herself together only when it really counts. She is a very emotionally aware person, well tuned-in to the emotions of others. Most frequently, she chooses to ignore them, but when she is moved she may suddenly reveal this sensitivity in her counsel to others. She is also quite a tease, with a sense of humor that ranges from gentle to slightly mean. Despite all the negative traits one might ascribe to her, it may be because of this emotional sensitivity that Rangiku generally remains well liked. She truly has people skills, as evidenced by the fact that she is able to get away with so much, and yet still be able to give orders when she wishes to assert herself. Even if she chooses to be a trial to them, Rangiku can generally get people eating out of her hand. Her teasing sense of humor can be used to dispel tension even if she can also use it to aggravate.
Digging deeper, despite being quite the social butterfly, Rangiku doesn't really like to let people get truly close to her. She is friendly with many people, but has few people she considers genuine friends, and even then she tends to view them as work partners and allies more than anything else. While she may seem like she is a person with little restraint, prone to silly babbling, Rangiku is very tight-lipped about anything important to her, and will not share except with greatest reluctance anything genuinely emotional to her. Even then, it would be more a 'letting it show slightly' than a 'telling you about it' moment. Rangiku also comes across as a very sexual and sexually enticing person who is very interested in men, but in fact while she may line up guys and manipulate them into doing things for her (such as buying her drinks, carrying her shopping bags) in actuality Rangiku keeps men at arm's length, and does not prefer to have any serious relationships or in fact relationships at all.
When it comes to women, Rangiku's relationships will either be more successful or more rocky. Rangiku will make a steadfast and loyal ally if she decides she can work with a woman, however there are some women she doesn't like, and she will be catty and bullying them to them, not hesitating to lord her beauty over them or torment them in other small and petty ways. Rangiku is very competitive with other women, so she gets along best with more passive and less sexual girls that defer to her and won't challenge her, or else tough women that are all business and have no time or attention to give to men or attracting them. Either way, women that won't compete with her for the social niche she wants to occupy. She prefers to be the Queen of the men in her social group and she wants them all either kissing her butt and letting her get away with whatever she wants or at least not crossing her. Despite the carefree way in which she may present herself, she is actually a very controlling and insecure person so she feels better when she thinks she has leverage on a person, male or female.
Rangiku sometimes acts vain, self-absorbed and selfish, and she is self-interested to a degree, however she can be very self-sacrificing when it comes to protecting others physically. Rangiku is actually a strong fighter, and she will not hesitate to place her body physically between another person and danger. When it comes to dangerous situations, Rangiku does feel fear keenly, but she does not flinch from it. She has a cold-hearted strength, once her mind is made up she does not waver or hesitate. She can be calculating, and much sharper than she otherwise appears. As much as Rangiku has a strong survival instinct and prefers to devote much of her time looking out for number one, she also has an underlying sense of honor, and if she feels bound by that honor to do something, she will do it no matter what the personal cost.
Abilities/Weapons: Rangiku always carries a katana style blade with her that she calls Haineko, or Ashcat. The blade has a dark red hilt, and the cross-guard is in the shape of a stylized cat's head. The blade is magic, containing a sealed spirit, which is named Haineko and manifests itself to Rangiku in the form of demi-human woman with cat ears, teeth and tail. Rangiku communicates with this entity psychically, synchronizing her own magical energy with the blade helps her wield it more effectively and with greater strength. Haineko can be used like an ordinary blade, but it can also dissolve into what appears to be dust, many tiny blades that Rangiku controls with her mind, sending them out in a cloud to cut her enemies. In this form, she can also use the blade and the raw magic used to wield it as a shield.
Rangiku is also a military-trained magic user, so she is familiar with magical theory and knows how to sense the magical fields around her to help her detect magical people or objects. She is familiar with basic offensive spells such as a simple spell that blasts a raw burst of magical energy at an opponent, taking the visual appearance of a red ball of light. She can't use this without limit, and she can either use a few large ones or multiple smaller ones. She is also familiar with techniques that allows her to use magical energy to temporarily reinforce her physical strength or speed up the movements of her body, although she cannot use these without limit either.
How well can your character hack?: Rakgiku could not hack at more than an easy-medium level of hacking.
Weaknesses: Rangiku's worst weakness is a tendency towards sloth and laziness. After a hard scrabble childhood of deprivation and subsistence living, followed by an adolescence of clawing her way to the top, Rangiku has a tendency to want to rest. She loves enjoying the luxuries of life, beautiful clothes, strong drink, the admiration of men and most of all leisure time, time to relax and enjoy herself and treat herself like a lady. Her motivation for most of her accomplishments was to reach this point in her life, so she has lost much of her drive to better herself. Rangiku has always done things not with an abstract goal of self-improvement, but to gain specific things. Because of this, she has not achieved as much as she could have if she had tried harder, either as fighter or as an officer. Once she hit the rank of Lieutenant she definitely started to slack off.
Rangiku's other weaknesses are her insecurity, and her general distrust of letting people get too close. If she were more secure and felt comfortable letting people be closer to her, Rangiku would be able to use her people skills in a much more productive fashion. If she were more secure and less petty and jealous, she could also use those skills to make the work place a truly harmonious one, instead of using them to put other people in their place.
As a fighter, Rangiku's weakness would be a susceptibility to strong, especially magically augmented blows. While she is a competent fighter, she is still a woman, not a 200 lb man. While she can use her magic to help her, she also doesn't have the natural upper body strength of of a physically fit large man, either.
History: Rangiku has no idea who her parents are or when exactly she was born. Her first memories are of wandering through the badlands, in a dusty deserted plain with little water or plant life. Rangiku wandered for days, eating mud and the bark off trees before collapsing from dehydration and exhaustion. She would have died if a silver-haired boy hadn't rescued her, finding her lapsing in and out of consciousness on the ground and giving her his food. The boy's name was Gin, and he took her out of the wastes and back to the town of Shashta. Gin was also an orphan, living on the streets, but he took care of Rangiku. She considered him her only real friend, the closest thing she had to family. Then one day, he disappeared mysteriously without telling her good-bye. Rangiku later learned from grilling the locals that he left with a military man.
After that, Rangiku's life had a new purpose, and she moved from the streets into an orphanage where she studied. While her personal memories were gone, her other skills were not, and Rangiku seemed to have been fairly well educated. Using her charms she would try to wheedle information about Gin out of the military people who passed through Shasta, and to inquire about the military Academy there, show off her magical talents, and generally try to endear herself to them. As soon as she was able, she moved to Ivona to join the military Academy there as a scholarship student with glowing letters of introduction. Despite her severely disadvantaged background, Rangiku did well at the Academy. Snobbish attitudes and social snubs only redoubled her efforts to surpass those who considered themselves her 'betters'. She worked hard, studied hard and developed her magical and tactical skills as well as her skills with a sword.
However, after she graduated she seemed to slowly lose her focus and drive. While she had worked like a demon to secure her position, once she reached the rank of Lieutenant, she seemed content to rest on her laurels. She no longer seemed to be gunning for a fast track to being a Captain. She continued to advance because of her natural talents, but neither did she work as relentlessly as she could have. She spent more and more time doing personal things, less and less time doing professional things. A certain unfocused restlessness remained, it was simply no longer directed at professional advancement. Somehow, Rangiku never seemed entirely satisfied, but people who knew her would be hard pressed to say what she found lacking in her life.
Rangiku generally likes working within larger command structures, so airships suited her. Even if she will be lazy and insubordinate if she can get away with it, somehow, her work still manages to get done. She spent some time serving both on land and in the air, and while she found no special preference for the environment itself she preferred the way a ship keeps moving from port to port. While she may have done a certain amount of whining about a certain individual known for his perfectionist tendencies when she got her transfer orders, secretly Rangiku was not that upset about the move to the Victoria II. As if was, her life had become...a tad boring, and it wasn't lost on her that traveling around in that particular ship she might at some point cross paths with someone she hadn't seen for a while.
