Looking back, that ff.net/early LJ period when people were getting really righteously indignant over Mary Sues just seems so weird to me. Of all the things to get offended about!
But I suppose that since all fanfiction is equally made-up and noncanonical, getting upset because someone wrote a "Go Set A Watchman"-inspired story about Golden Age Clark Kent being a segregationist is really no more sensible than getting upset because of someone's ridiculously overpowered, beloved-by-all X-Men OC. But I still get indignant on behalf of my favorite characters.
