A reproduction of the first submarine built by Narcís Montruiol (the Ictineus I from 1859)
Past Sunday, my son Adrià,
graeco_celt and me went to visit the Museu Marítim de Barcelona, sited when the old Drassanes (shipyards) were from the early middle age times until the half part of the 20th century, when they were transformed in the actual museum.
The collection of old ships, boats, maps and navigation instruments is incredible and it is still bigger than I remembered from the last time I visited it, it has more than 25 years ago. We made an spectacular collection of photos and enjoyed a pleasant visit. Anyway I leave to Pip to comment a bit more about all it and me I will concentrate to show some interesting things about the submarines :)
More photos here bellow:
The heroic New Zealander-Catalan explorer
graeco_celt in front the - excellent- reproduction of the first submarine (it was all sold in pieces, after more than 20 successful immersions) You can compare her size with the boat.
Frontal view of the same Ictineus I. Here you can understand why was called "fish" (yes
itsmagnetic, I know, I know :D)
A scary image of a Narcís Monturiol made in wax, placed inside the submarine.
A model for each submarine and some other Narcís Monturiol's objects.
La Navegación Submarina, the technical book he wrote.
A true window of the first submarine :)
The reproduction of the Ictineus II placed in a park in front the Port of Barcelona. This submarine was bigger than the first and it is from 1863 (you can see the pair of human elements to compare the size)
The helix of the Ictineus II (you can se that it was too small, eh?)
