Stuff I do: write for characters so forcefully trying to avoid something, that it becomes near impossible to write-- self-destruction to the point of deathwishes means the piece needs to be long-form, in order to create a vivid picture out of negative space: the holes in the conversation about-which the character refuses to talk or think about. This fundamentally breaks my short stories, as the reader has no idea what's going on, because the narrator both refuses to tell them, and because the narrator surrounds her/himself with people who won't cross that line either.

I need to write some less tumultuous characters. Or, at least, characters who aren't so good at avoiding people.
