Between the gym and the ballgame (oh, and being caught outside walking in gym shorts in a mother of a hailstorm), I seem to have missed the furor over the Family Tree.
Well, not MISSED it exactly, as my flist is esplodey with it.
Dudes. Yes, JKR maths are annoying.
But. The fact someone married a Longbottom doesn't make her Neville's grandmother. It in fact does not make Neville a Black. It doesn't. Okay, Gran is Augusta, right? And we have no reason whatsoever to think she was married to Harfang--we've never heard his given name. So, okay, if Neville grandfather was Joe Longbottom, and Joe and Harfang were brothers, all that means is Callidora Black is Neville's great-aunt by marriage. This does not give him Black blood. Also, Callidora and Harfang have one son and one daughter. If the son was Frank, why isn't the daughter (Neville's aunt) in the picture? The only other relative we know of is great-uncle Algie, and unless he's the crossed out blot next to Harfang, he's not on here. Unless he is also a Longbottom, which again only illustrated the potential for other Longbottoms. And hell, for all we know, Augusta has always been a Longbottom and her spouse took her name in the tradition of whoever has the higher social standing being the name that's kept.
Similarly, as we do not know James Potter's parents' names, we have little reason to believe Charlus is his father. Hell, of all the names on here, that particular one seems least likely to necessarily imply relation. It's a common enough name, and it seems pretty likely there might be more than one branch of the Potter family. Also, if that WERE who they were, then Sirius running to them probably would have gotten them struck off the tree, right?
Anyway. None of these people have to be who everyone is flipping out about.
